Paracord : Lets See Yours

I've had to retie more monkey fists than I care to remember. Even with the jig I made it's still luck than skill that lets me make one.

Oh you horrible, horrible person you.

Actually they look comfortable.

As far as monkey fists, I think the biggest problem people have is they try to tighten them too much at one time, usually you should go around it multiple times to get it tight. Another problem people encounter is how many wraps they do around the core. Different core sizes require a different amount of wraps.

Google "Monkey Fist Chart" and click images, scroll down until you see the wooden chart that tells you how many wraps around a particular cords. Now, assuming the core size is the same, also consider that larger cords require fewer wraps and snaller cord requires more. The charts I suggested googling is likely for 550 cord.

Below I will post a fool proof Monkey Fist that is great for keychains and knife lanyards that is pretty simple to learn. Remember, tighten your cords slowly.

Easy Diamond Knot instructions (you can do it). Where he says "go around middle finger", that middle finger is your lanyard hole in your knife or your sheath.

Easy Monkey Fist instructions. You can obviously use all one color. He just ties an overhand knot for the 'core' but I actually use a Diamond knot because it's more round and makes the final product look better. When you get done trying a Monkey Fist on your own, but one of the (two) tails back through the loops before tightening it up. Be patient when tightening it up. Once its tight adjust the loop through your sheath for your belt. Snip off both tails leaving about 3/16" or so, melt it with your lighter until its smooth with the monkey fist.

[Note]
For this Monkey Fist learn to tie the Diamond Knot first, it's also known as the lanyard knot and is used for a lot of stuff. Use the Diamond Knot for the core as opposed to the overhand that he shows. I think I mentioned that above but I copied and pasted this from my orher forum. :)

This is an 8 ball I got from Walmart wrapped in 10mm climbing rope.

My biggest problem with the monkey fist was not having a jig, and then not having an appropriately sized jig. Trying to match spacing to ball size is actually more difficult than I thought, leading to the loops passing over one another. Lots of trial and error on drilling placement holes for sizing the jig before I figured out what I was doing.

I've never used a jig. You just have to tighten slowly and keep the cords straight as you go.

Agreed, no need for a jig and plus 1 on the taking up the slack slowly. I also use a pair of hemostats to help pull the cord tight, saves my arthritic fingers. :) .

This one took me three times because it's a 1" ball and 275 cord. I tried to go to fast. Once you get it tighten it up good.

Nice stuff boxer .45! You got skills. This is my first attempt at making a duel colored fob. Tied using snake knots. What is your method for joining 2 different colored paracords?

The Manny Method works great if you have a fid needle. With a snake knot you can weave both cords around a cord, so you loop one end through your knife lanyard hole and leave the other end just sticking up, keep weaving to desired lengthcut off the extra top tail.
