I recently picked up a top-loading Paragon Ceramic kiln for not much money and was thinking of mounting it on its side to make it side loading for heat treating. Anyone ever do this or have any other ideas for modifying it for knife-making ? :jerkit: It is octagon shaped and the interior is about 12 inches wide and 20 inches deep. Thanks in advance for any input.

Most folks that I know who have a vertical just cut a hole in the top and hang blades into it. One of the problems you'll have putting it on its side is that you have elements on the floor and you really don't want to short across elements with something like a blade.

Well, that was going to be my second question (How do I put the blades in ?) and it seems you have answered both...thanks much !!

No problem! Make sure you get some stainless wire to hang your blades with. It'll hold up a lot longer.

if you want to put it on it's side you can put a kiln shelf over the elements on the floor. then all you have to do is to modify the hinge so thst it will work on it's side.

Thank you gentlemen. I contacted the company and did some research on this kiln and will probably keep it as top loading (now that you told me how)....by kiln standards this thing is big...the interior space is 17.5 inches wide by 18 inches deep and the door would be large and cumbersome if I put it on its side....putting it on its side might also create structural stresses it could not handle . I also learned what a steal (no pun intended ) this purchase was.....I almost feel guilty for how little I paid for it....bought it from a charity thrift store.
