Well I took a leap of faith and bid and won a CPM D2 Paramil on ebay for $100. Its used, but the owner claims, just wear on the clip and light scrathes on the blade, barely visible. I dont know much about this model as my Para is S30V and i only own D2 blades. Not CPM D2...

A) was this a fair price for a lightly used paramil D2
B) anyone own this knife? what are your thoughts on this blade in this steel?

You scored, especially if the seller is honest about the condition. CPMD2 is an outstanding blade steel and the D2 Para is a fantastic knife.

CPM D2 is one of my favorite blade steels

Now if Sal would only make a Para in CPM M4 or S35VN... Oh man that my might end my folder addiction... no wait it would just increase it... lol

Thanks for the input Reeek. I just got a Edge Pro so I am looking forward to putting a edge on this bad boy.

Fix it for you ;)

Yes the Para in D2 is one of the best knives ever, next to the Military in D2 :D

My favorite Spydie yet. Smooth as glass, sharp as hell and stays that way for a good long while!

I stripped the clip for a better match against the blade and love it.

Mine has great fit and finish, the build is definitely high quality. My experience with the CPM D2 is that it holds an edge about the same as my S30V Para, but seems to be a little easier to sharpen.

That's definitely a keeper, and a great price in todays market.
The D2 Para has been at my side for the past two or maybe three? years now, it's the one I always return to and compare all other knives with.
Cpm D2 is an excellent EDC steel, In my experience it holds an edge much better than S30V, also takes a much finer edge as well , and most importantly it's doesn't chip easily. It's just as easy if not easier to sharpen compared to S30V too.
I've been pretty brutal on my first D2 Para almost treating it as a "beater" and it's held up tremendously well. I did make sure I picked up a backup though when they were sold on special.
One thing to note, dont make a habit of flicking the Para open as it will quickly lead to blade play.

Enjoy.

I have a para sprint run in D2 and it is fantastic. It is not easy to sharpen, but once you get there, it does hold an edge for a long time. I love mine, and yes, it is of great quality.

I miss mine, never carried it due to the lack of a tip up option, should have just sent it to STR.

Interestingly (maybe?), it looks like the CPM D2 takes a different "patina" than regular ingot D2.

Nice patina softrock!

Wow. That's for sure. That might very well be the best looking patina I have ever seen! I have a S30V coming in the mail (yay) so I am happy about that.

I wish more folders were made in carbon steels. I am a big 1095 person myself but I have no predjudice against the good stainless steels...so life is good...and will be better when my new Paramilitary-1 gets here...this week I hope.

OK. I am going to go out on the limb and hopefully not cause any trouble...I hope not. At any rate, what is all this Jazz about tip up vs tip down? I mean, I know what it all means but is it really that important? So important that a person, with all due respect, would sell a D2 Paramilitary simply because the clip/tip was oriented in one way vs another? I just have never really seen that much difference in which way the tip is carried. Is it about blade deployment? Perhaps safety? I thought I read somewhere that the US Military specifies one orientation vs another?

I do not wish to hijack but I just had to ask. If I had a D2 Para I wouldn't sell it if the clip were perpendicular to the handle:eek:...I don't think.

I love the way CPM-D2 feels when it cuts, and really wish Spyderco'd used it more (I'm not sure if Crucible is even making the stuff any more; vaguely recall hearing they had issues with runs of it.) I dislike tip-up carry and likely wouldn't ever carry my Para if it was a normal S30V one. I carry it because CPM-D2 is that good.

As for why tip-down is bad compared to tip-up: Instead of having the protruding spine of the blade tucked out of the away against a pocket seam, it's sticking out right where it can catch and scratch my hand and anything else in that pocket, and when I pull it out, the knife isn't in a natural position to open it like it is with tip-up carry ones.

In my experience CPMD2 has held an edge just as long or longer than my S30V knives and is really no harder to sharpen. I also have not chipped the CPMD2 but have the S30V. Mind you this is a one person sample.

As far as tip up/down, for "me" again I would have it no other way than tip down with a compression lock.
