Paramilitary 2 detent broke?

I'm curious how this issue was solved for other people, because today I got my blue Para back exactly as I sent it in: without a detent ball. Said they reconditioned it to the best of their capability...

Never mind. Charlynn is taking care of it already. The knife was sent back by mistake, I'll just return it for repair.

Today I have received a new Para Military 2 Camo, but after opening it for 3-4 times, detent ball fell out. This is DOA item. As I live in Europe I have paid about 200 USD for this Spyderco. Disapointing.

But, really dissapoinitng is: I contacted Spyderco. I have sent them pictures of the defect. They replied quickly, asking me to send it to them to service. But, costs of mailing from Europe I must pay and will not be refunded! And I must make an custom temporary export declaration in my country (in addition to mailing costs).

Dissapointing. I must say my experience with Benchmade, when springs broke was perfect: I received all replacement parts in 9 days (USA-Europe). With DOA Spyderco I would have to be for weeks to months without my brand new knife and spend possibly another half ot it's US price on top of allready spent 200 USD. I will see with my dealer for replacement and am seriously contemplating to request a refund.

But, what will happend when this Spyderco detent ball falls out again after some time? My dealer will have no obligation to me after a year or two!

Not much else they can do for you.. You could talk to your dealer who might refund you shipping and/or send a replacement to you. (if your TV was DOA would you contact Panasonic or your dealer?)
Putting in a new detent ball or swapping out the liner with a new one isn't trivial so they would want to do it themselves.

Filling out your customs form takes about 5 minutes so it isn't that bad ;)

Welcome to the forums btw :D

If my TV was DOA, law says immediate replacement within 7 days (not service!). But, if TV went dead during the Warranty, I would send it to Panasonic service in my country and not in Japan. Law in EU and in my counry mandates defective item under warranty - company pays shipment both ways. Finally, Panasonic is very unlikely to drop dead (I have quite a few of them in our aparments). That would be one of the main reasons to buy a Panasonic. Because, I expect it to be excellent. As I expected from Spyderco.

If I did swap assist spring in my Benchmade Mini Barrage in about 10 minutes, swapping a liner would take about 2-3 minutes (OK, maybe I would have to heat threadlocker to release it, then a bit longer).

They do send out parts, but when you do the work yourself the warranty is void so they aren't too keen on it usually.

His warranty is basically void by time, cost and hassle. If something breaks years later the same issues remain. If he calls/writes them and says "I know the warranty is void but I want the part anyways" that's his choice. Spyderco should honor that, it's fair in my opinion.

Option B is have the seller exchange the knife and let them deal with Spyderco.

Either way it's a hassle that goes with buying things. Someone has to be that small statistical sample that gets a defect. Spyderco will take care of you as good as any and much better than most.

That hasn't been my experience with Spyderco. Benchmade yes. ZT yes. But not Spyderco.

It depends a bit on what parts you want. Charlynn has sent me everything I've needed for some old discoed knives, but I'm not sure they will normally send out a new locking liner. They might since the OP isn't in the US and sending a knife back and forth is a bit of trouble.

I purchased a limited edition signed Ulize that had a hairline crack in the liner. I sent them pictures and explained the situation ie. that I didn't reside in the US and that I accepted the voided warranty. Charlynn still refused to send me one.

The german knife maker who designed the knife, Uli Hennicke, ended up taking care of me. I bought the knife from him. He could have told me to contact Spyderco, but he is a stand up guy who stands by his customers.

I have no expert with other parts, but then again, a knife isn't comprised of that many parts.

I just wondered if there was any update on this? Does Spyderco have a date range or anything on the boxes that they may have issues with the detent ball? I have no problem with the one I carry but I am wondering if I need to be concerned about my "backup" model sitting in the box? It's date code says it's from Nov. 2013.

Nice story....makes me feel good I just got one.

No doubt...I have 2 sitting in the boxes they came in.

Ball detents can fall out. It's life. Spyderco doesn't ask for your date code when you send in a knife for repair, so they wouldn't know unless it's written on the inside of a scale.

I had a detent fall out of a Buck Mayo after a long time's worth of hard use. Stuff happens.

Thanks for such incredible insight. NO kidding they fall out. I have no problem with them falling out from normal wear and tear, just not out of the box after a few flicks.

Spyderco wouldn't need to as ME for a date code. They may know of the batch they had problems with. Sal stated they had a problem and I'm just asking.

I am thinking it could be one of two problems. I am assuming that the ball is press fit and it would be either the ball is out of spec or the hole. If it is the ball from an out of spec batch, then this would affect all their knives that use the compression lock. If it is the hole, then I have no idea if it would affect knives other than the PM2 since it may be drilled on a separate machine.

Let's say they had a hopper of balls, and that hopper was getting low on in spec balls, and they dumped a batch of out of spec balls in. It would then be a crap shoot if you got a bad one from the same date/batch.

Hi Faith,

Welcome to our forum.

This thread is 6 years old and I'm sure that whatever problem existed, if any, it has been long since solved.
