I used my new PM2 to gut a deer i shot tonight. It was awesome. The knife was razor sharp and it stayed that way throughout gutting and skinning it. I can't wait to use it again soon, It looked awesome all bloodied up!

See this is a good example of what belongs in my new The Knife Life thread.....

Stories and comments about knife related things that don't really need a whole new thread:)

Congrats. Any pics? You'll get warmer responses with bloody pics. Enjoy your venison.

My brontosaurus sword just took its first dino head of the season. Nothing like a good blade.

Did you ever make the pike head for the boar hunter? I read that thread and was thinking I would have jumped on the chance to have it made.

Congrats on the deer! How hard was the knife to clean up afterwards? I think the open design would be decent on cleanup, but bits and pieces can find their way into any and all crevices.

Also wonder how repeated washing affects the action over time. Just add a little lube for maintenance?

You shot a deer at night??

Haha, yes tonight means after work out here in the sticks where i live. I shot it at 6:30. I wanted to get a pick but my phone (nokia 1520) was in a plastic bag in the truck. The knife was very easy to clean, i just ran out under warm water and scrubbed it with a soapy sponge, i can't see any gunk stuck in the liners. Ten times easier to clean than my zt 350 that i gutted an elk with.

Where's the damn pics?;) Congrats on the deer but man we need to see pics.:) Next time alright!:D I'm going grouse hunting tomarrow and if i get anything there will be an ocean of pics. Can't wait for deer season. Walked throught the woods 3 times looking for grouse. Saw 4 (3 was in one day)but the foliage was still so thick where i was couldn't get a good shot through the tree's. Did get a good shot at one but if i did hit it couldn't find it. Been a week since last went hoping the leaves have fallen some. Going road hunting next couple days with hopfully better luck. Coulda shot 3 deer when was looking for grouse . Had the chance to kill 2 with 1 shot. Can't wait for deer season.

Pic from last year. Pathetic rack i know but was good sized deer.

Woo! Deer thread!

Here's a little seven point from last season. Benchmade 710DLC-1 - M390 blade, and spacer replaced with standoffs does a great job cleaning them out!

Awesome. I've never seen a M390 coated 710 blade. Didn't get a dang knife in any pics last year just realized. And here i was giving the OP crap and forgot to include a blade last year.

Yeah, the original run of M390 710s was numbered and had both satin and DLC blades, the 710-1 and 710DLC-1. When they did the unnumbered run, it was only satin, the 710-2.

I started getting back into Benchmade after the -1 runs and one of the guys on BM's company forum was kind enough to give me a great deal - pretty much at-cost - on the DLC-1 in that pic.

Edit: btw, good luck with those grouse!

710-2 on top and the DLC-1 on bottom:

Great pics guys! There is another reason that i didn't post any pics that i should probly tell you guys... It was a doe! Haha. Not that there's anything wrong with that but i want too proud of it! It was a depredation tag. Still got a good amount of meat off her though! I had to shoot her twice because i was using my dads fun and he hasn't shot it for years, the scope must of been off cuz the first shot hit her in the lower shoulder, then i aimed for the head to put her out of misery and i hit her in the brisket. That put her down. We ate the heart last night while i was cutting her up. My two boys and 4 year old girl loved it! Do you guys like the heart?

Nothing wrong with taking does at all; they taste better anyway! I'm in it for the meat more than the trophies and in western TN you can take 3 bucks a year and three does a day during the season (yeah... we've got a lot of deer here. Not huge compared to up north but they're all over the place).

I've got an aunt and cousin that like to pickle the heart and eat it that way, though I've never really had much of a taste for it myself. Backstrap and tenderloins are where it's at. :D

But.... please get that gun sighted in properly before you go out again and wound something that runs off and you can't recover!

Did i read that right? Three does a day? Wow that's awesome! How many do you usually harvest? Best way to cook heart I'd to slice is thin and coat it in flour and fry it in a little oil on med heart with lots of salt and pepper. It's hard to beat! I think the scope may be sighted in for him, but for me it was off, maybe i jerk a little different than he does:)

Yup, 3 does a day in TN Unit L, which is most of the western half of the state.

These past few years I've been fortunate enough to have gotten 3 or 4 a year. I'm usually out there continuously for the Wed-Thurs-Fri-Sat over Thanksgiving and then sometimes a few more days around Christmas. Last year I didn't see anything at all Wednesday or Thursday but then that 7 point showed up probably 20 minutes after shooting light in the morning on Friday. Got down, dragged him to the edge of the field, cleaned him, and got back up in the stand. 40 minutes later three does walk out and I managed to drop two of them. Good morning!

I know this makes me a "knife knut" but it's kind of fun to compare how well various designs and steels do for cleaning and skinning. I started off a while back with a Kershaw Shallot, then upgraded to a VG-10 Endura, then two years ago had a CF/M390 Military, and now the M390 710. That long, slim clip point in that awesome steel just seems to do the best job for me.

I can't believe you shot 3 deer one morning. In Utah we're lucky if we draw out and if we do we only get to take one buck a year! I was very impressed with the PM2, I especially liked how the g10 scales were nice and grippy even when the whole knife was coated in blood.
