Paramilitary 2 or manix 2

So I'm a couple days away from buying my next knife and I'm debating between the spyderco manix 2 and the spyderco paramilitary 2. I plan to make it a, "do everything knife". I would like for y'all to help me make that decision. Make sure to make a solid argument to support your choice in knife. :D

I have no idea what you would like the best, but I prefer the PM2.
I liked the old Manix OK, but don't care for the Manix 2 at all. I don't care for the lock or all of the unneeded jimping.

They're very different knives and many love the Manix 2. You may also, so I would suggest handling both if you get a chance.

Breakdown,

Its funny. I'm trying to figure out, which one I would like to carry for EDU. I own both, but im giving one to my son. Ive been molling it over the past week and still stumped.

Both, have great things about them. idk.

Ill post some photos side by side if that helps.

good luck. battle

I would probably go with the Para II but I think it depends on the type of lock you like the most!

So, there is a side by side comparison.

There both, Sprint runs, but you get a good look. Hope this helps.

I think im leaning for the Para 2 but im still thinking about it. Because the Para 2 has a longer blade it has a "tad" more side to side play. Not much, just a tad..

I prefer the Manix. I think It's a little more stout, yet still an incredible slicer. I have more confidence in the lock also. I had both, but traded my pm2. You really can't go wrong with either one though.

I like the extra jimping on the manix 2, I have the XHP sprint run. I have large hands, and the Manix fits them better than the pm2. The pm2 is growing on me, but I still am selling it.

I have both, and you really cant go wrong either way. Currently carry my PM2 more, but its a much more recent acquisition than my manix, so that may be why. I think the manix looks a little better while the para carries a little better. I must say the ffg manix blade is one of my favorites ever for edc tasks all around, but the para is still good. Both locks kick ass differently. For as close of a call as it is I might say the manix because its less costly.

Which one would have a longer life expectancy... Or is that a loaded question.

Both are great, and you should get both eventually, but if you can find a ParaMilitary 2 in stock, get it. It is, by far, the best "do it all " knife I've ever used. I used to have a different knife in my pocket every few days as I rotated through my collection, but my Para2 has been carried almost exclusively since I got it almost a year ago. It's that good.

The Para2 has a great pivot system, with bronze washers on either side. You can tweak it until the blade opens with almost zero friction, but has no perceptible blade play in any direction.

The Compression lock is ideal - the simplicity, longevity and reliability of a liner lock, but stronger due to having less metal to compress and bend.

The flat ground blade starts thick at the base and tapers down toward the tip, making it an incredible slicer.

The blade is pretty much inline with the handle, and the handle design is secure even when wet.

If you're into outdoorsy stuff, the thin (but strong) and flat bladed Para2 compliments a thick convex edged bushcraft knife very well.

I own both and prefer the Manix 2. While the PM2 is a great knife and I have been EDC'ing mine the last few days, I like the Manix 2 and the CBBL better than the compression lock. But to be honest, these imho are the best knives Spyderco makes for EDC and you cannot go wrong with either.

Not at all. Its all comes down to proper care, cleaning. And even then nothing last forever.

After, giving it much thought this morning and working with them both, I have to give the edge to the Manix 2. (small edge)

The manix 2 fits better in my hand.

Spyderco has a good reputation and I have heard great customer service. I have never had to use it...knock on wood).

Hope this helps. Battle

Both are excellent, I've owned a couple variants of both, gave a couple to family, but favor the manix myself, with the XL being my favorite variety, there is a fair amount of overlap between the abilities of both. The PM2 is better for delicate work, picking splinters, trimming nails, cutting small, but important odds and ends. The sharp fine tip, smooth and comfortable oversized handles, smaller guard between the choils, high grippy thumb ramp, it all gives excellent blade control. The Manix2 has a broader blade with a much stronger tip, more texture from the jimped liners, large guard(and heel guard on the XL), your hand sits secure, deep in the grip to keep from slipping when piercing or cutting heavier material.

The only version of the Manix 2 I'm not a fan of is the standard sabre ground/solid liner model, too heavy for it's size on a knife that already takes a broad patch of pocket space, and IMO it loses some slicing ability to gain strength not really needed, I much prefer the FFG versions, replacing screws with rivets on the FRN lightweight version is another gripe, FFG G10 sprints are perfection IMO. I prefer the BB lock over the compression, it's more ambi(PM2 lock feels better lefty, when operated with a thumb IMO), and easier for me to work when flipping the blade open or closed, I pinch it with thumb and forefinger, then pull it back. The compression lock takes a bit more to get used to, and while I haven't deactivated it inadvertently, it does interrupt the smooth back profile of the knife, and gets bumped when pushing the knife hard where the BB lock's buttons stay out of the way on either side of the handle.

Just get both. Then you can really decide for yourself, there's just no other way honestly. With normal use, not abuse they will both last years and years. There is no life expectancy.

I'll echo amen74. Pick whichever you like most and get that first.

I just got my first PM2:
Pros: Awesome FFG slicer, great blade shape, and 4-way clip configuration. The compression lock is sweet too, keeping your digits out of the path of the closing blade.

Cons (I really have to try to find some): The nested liners give it "less" of a sturdy feel compared to the Manix2, and not by much.

My older 154CM Manix2 (Hollow ground):
Pros: Strength - both in the lock design and in the full handle liners. You can get the same FFG slicing ability with the newer models as well.

Cons: The ball bearing lock takes a bit to get used to, I use a "thumb and fore-finger with the butt of the handle nested in my palm" closing technique.
Also, Tip up carry only.
