Paramilitary... one month later.

I've said many times in the past that I've long been intrigued by Spyderco's designs, and every Spyderco knife I've purchased has more than met my expectations.

But I've never been truly sold on any one brand.

I EDC'd a third generation Endura for about a year, then a Native. Then a long period (three and a half years) where I carried nothing but a Benchmade 710.

I put that Benchmade on the shelf a month ago to give this Paramilitary thing I'd been drooling over for years a try. And I think I have to say I'm pretty well sold on Spyderco now.

This knife has been everything I've wanted and have been looking for for years in a knife. I wish I'd known years ago that a ~3 inch blade was all I needed.

Out of the box this thing came wicked sharp, but a few passes over the white Sharpmaker rods had it whittling hair. After a month of regular use, I haven't had to use anything coarser than those fine rods to bring a mirror polish back to the edge.

I still haven't gotten to use it really hard, but it's whittled plenty of skewers for grilling and some sticks for fun, and it's deanimated dozens of boxes at work.

I'm still waiting for that first good scratch on the blade, but the pocket clip is starting to show some wear so the knife is finally feeling like mine. A knife never truly feels like mine until it has a few dings.

Out of the box the knife had only one blemish. A small ding at the ricasso that doesn't impede function or stability at all.

I kinda like it. One of those little things that make it mine.

After a month of use, the blade still centers perfectly when closed and there's no play in any direction open or closed.

I've had a lot of knives in my life, but so far this is the one.

A military (maybe the Ti version if I like the looks when I see it) is going to be a Christmas gift to myself, but I honestly don't see this guy leaving my pocket anytime soon.

Like I said in my first post about this knife, I'm sorry I waited so long to get one, but I'm so happy I finally did.

I feel the same way you do. I love my para and i'm pretty sure it will always be my favorite.

Congrats! Glad you like your Para.

It's a wonderful thing to discover Spyderco . They just plain work well. Great read about your Para, I enjoyed it.:D

Just a pic of my Para to show it with the pocket clip removed and replaced with original screws and some washers so that the screws would seat normally. I think its much more comfortable in the hand with the clip removed but found that if you take it off without replacing the screws then the exposed holes get full of grit and lint which will eventually find its way into the pivot system and take away the knifes smooth blade opening...

The P Mil is one of the best folders of all time. ;)
Thanks for sharing.

Ive had mine for about 3 months and i love it more than any other knife in my collection.
Its almost the perfect knife.
Spyderco all the way.
This is my first spyderco by the way.

There just so good I'm considering getting the digi camo version as well. When tested by a website called cutleryscience the Para was dropped onto its tip from 3 ft high several times onto hard concrete floor and the tip did not chip or break. Then the knife was dropped onto its tip from 6 ft high and guess what, its tip was still there... The tip did break later on after more drops from the 6 ft height but its so reassuring to know that if you do happen to drop it one day onto concrete then its highly unlikely that you will have to get a new blade...:)

I have been trying out the Manix 2 lately, and while it's a great folder, it just doesn't replace my P-Mil.

My P-Mil is truly the smoothest folder I own, and lockup is on par with the best.

It's still my favorite EDC, and I don't see that changing until maybe the Para 2 comes out.

Thanks for the pics and story.

I've really enjoyed my D2 Para -- had it for a few months or so and have carried it pretty much every day. It has a bit of patina forming near the pivot area but I kinda don't care. Its meant to be carried and used.

The para is a great knife, one of my favorites as well:)

I agree too - I have a love affair with the para myself. I'm not the picky kind that will let a few things kill a deal for me. I'm an easy consumer for the most part and the Para has as few "I would change" elements to it as any knife I have ever carried. I like it just the way it is, redesign coming or not.

I have probably 25 Spydies, but no Para. I just have not been drawn to it yet, but I suspect that day will come.

So would you buy another Para Psychopomp, what do you think of the camo version ? Does anyone have a Para in the alternative colors to show us close-ups ? I know there are plenty of pics of them on the forum but its always good to have a few more...

If you dont already have the black s30v blade with black g-10, its worth looking into. I personally love the look of black on black.

Sprint Run S90V and carbon fiber with 4 way clip and minus the blade tang notch. :p

just a guess

Just curious about something. You live in Cali - how are the knife laws there? I've heard they're just as strict as NY.

I don't know a lot about NY.

As far as I know it's a 4" concealed limit and fixed has to be open carry with a good reason. It's really city by city codes here. I may be wrong, but it's nothing like that 2.5" NYC B.S.

I carry my full sized Millie all the time with no problems, I hang with LEO's all the time, no worries.

I always carry what I want, and I've never had a problem either.
One of the few good things about Cali.

Would I buy another one? In a heartbeat. Actually, I'm thinking about picking up another one to keep on the shelf in the event that something happens to this one.

I don't like the digital camo handles only because I think they're counterintuitive. God help you if you drop a digi-camo knife in the leaves or tall grass at dusk. The same goes for the OD green or foliage green that Spyderco uses (I'm just not a fan of that color, and don't really see what it's so popular, but to each his own). I don't really like orange, but orange makes a lot more sense than camo or OD green.

I'd love to see handles in colors other than black, though I do prefer black. If deep blue, purple or real green G-10 scales were offered, I'd have one of each. In fact I've been entertaining the idea of finding someone to make some purple scales for my Para.
