Parangs, Barongs?

Has anyone looked at or used the "Medical Bolo" from WW II? I have three and there are bruts, but not much on the modern heat treat technology.

Has anyone seen the CAS Iberia bolos? I wondered about quality, since they are relatively inexpensive. The 12" bladed one can be had for 70 and the longer one for 80.

They also make a barong. Their blades are described as spring steel, and the knives look like the ones that Thieron Arms sell for a little more.

Arty, I do not have any of the CAS Iberia models. However, they are made of L 6 or L 7 steel, which is what large lumbermill bandsaw blades are made of. It is one of the toughest tool steels there is when heattreated properly.

I have one of the Kampilan by CAS Iberia. It's L6 steel, and seems properly heat treated. It was however, poorly finished (metal wise) with lots of dips and waves in the blade. It's thin too, at 1/8". But a good value, none the less. Just be prepared for the finish issues.

Thanks. Seemed too good to be true. You get what you pay for in this world, but sometimes a bit more or less.

I just wanted to chime in on the Valiant Goloks.
There are many reviews over at Outdoors Magazine, and Valiant products are well thought of there. I have had several of their knives. The best outdoors ones (IMO) are the medium survival golok, and the Golok potong. Long enough to be effective and still plenty strong. Not the splitting tool a khuk is tho. Wandi is a pleasure to deal with.

BWray, glad to see there is not a N American outlet. I'll be browsing your wares from time to time and hopefully ordering a few items. I got a hankering for some Indonesian damascus :)

I didn't want to discourage you from trying one. Just wanted you to know what to expect. Like I say, they are a pretty good value.
