Paranoia would be an appropriate label if the outcome to "checking the guy out" had been different.
As it was, the school reported it and the police checked it out and sent him on his way. It shows the system is working.
Of course it should be investigated and of course "common sense" should apply regarding how the "Incident" was treated.
Bit of a non-story, really.
Using that analogy,everyone with a case on their belt needs to be checked out by the cops before they go on their way because somebody "reported "it.What if it was a cell phone?
Here is my take on it.If someone wanted to use a knife to do some harm,they will probably hide it very well until its too late.
Same goes for any weapon,not many people will walk up brandishing weapons before its time to do what they intended.
