paranoid of losing nice knives

I almost lost a half decent EDC Schrade pocket knife. I was so scared afterward that I got 2 Frost Cutley knives that were the same specs to carry EDC. Now it seems I get a good Knife and a POS backup to carry EDC. Am I crazy and need do I need a knife shrink?

It sucks to lose a nice knife, but what's the point of buying something like that and not using it every day? I can understand 'strictly show' pieces, but a nice EDC knife should be carried every day :D

When I first got my Sebbie I used to worry about it too. I usually carry it in my M1 Waistpack so it's reasonably secure but I've gotten used to it being there and using it so I'm not so paranoid about it now.

I've just got a brand new Strider SnG which lives in the front pocket of my jeans and, while I'm concerned about it, it doesn't occupy my every waking thought. I guess you get used to anything eventually.

thats why i like larger knives and strong clips. something like my 806 or one of my kabars are easy to tell if you still have. i feel nude with out my 806 so when ever its not there i can tell fast.

I was waiting to read about someone being afraid to lose some $400-800 custom folder, not a $20-30 slip joint. :) Loosing anything sucks, but loosing a $10-50 knife isn't the end of the world.

If you're going for a walk, you can clip a folder to your pocket. If you go for a hike through deep woods, put it in a belt pouch, or drop it into the bottom of a pocket. Get used to having a good knife being there.

Your knives and you could all be safe and warm inside, never going anywhere or doing anything ... :p

Wade, if you're worried about loosing a knife, tighten the clip, then you won't have to worry about losing it :D

Was gonna expand on the concept of "loose things sucking" but then realized we'd have to move to W&C.

I'm going through this too. I've left knives all over the place, right now I'm tearing my truck apart for a crappy Frost drop point hunter that is being relegated to the tackle box to cut bait etc. The only thing I'm worried about is a friend sitting on it. On the other hand, I almost went into shock when I lost my Spyderco Ladybug, and was elated to find it later that week. Losing any knife is a pain in the arse, but don't go out and buy a crappy knife that will not work for you. Don't carry the knife your gramps used, don't carry the knife that will absolutely devestate you if you lose it, buy one that you will beat the living hell out of, and that you can depend on, and stick with that one.

I lost my Minigrip a few weeks ago and have been looking at retention methods. I've been fooling around with lanyards made of Survivor cord from Wal Mart (orange and black, about 3/32" dia). I even purchased some small carabiner clips and experimented with clipping the carabiner to my belt loop and letting my knife hang in the pocket. It works, but it's none too pretty, and presentation is slow.

Then I tried a long lanyard and looping it under my belt, with the knife in the RR pocket. One pass under the belt works ok, but the knot I have in the end (I've tried various sizes) works inconsistently. If I wrap it around my belt twice, I can't pull the knife out. I've thought of getting some fancy beads from a craft store and trying those, placing them above the belt,, but I don't hold out much hope of it working well. I looked at the chains and belt snaps with chains at the Ace Hardware, they have a good selection, but I hate to go to such extremes.

I'm beginning to think that bottom of the pocket carry, which is where my Minigrip is now, as recommended by Esav, or a leather belt case, might be the way to go.

Hmm, does anyone make a belt mounted combination cell phone/knife case?

Experimentation continues. I am following this thread with interest.

Being afraid of losing your knife is better than being afraid of the knife.
I have some habits that are so ingrained as to be a problem. Like putting my wallet back in my pocket immediately and having to get it back out a moment later when the cashier hands my card back. My worry about losing things became a deep mental conditioning to keep track of my stuff. Like KaBar alluded to, I can just 'tell' when something isn't in its place.
I have actually only totally lost one knife out of my pocket though many times I have had then slip out in the car and be on the seat or drop when I got out. (That is why i am happy to work places where I don't have to wear slacks.) Blue jean pockets rock. My edc (110) is a belt carry. I dropped my Spyderco Endura a couple of times out on the property. Took a year to find it once. I had plenty of replacements to carry til I found it.
I would probably use knives I shouldn't, but use your knives. Most can be replaced with a little cash.
Marbles are what I can't find.....

I don't really worry about it that much. Generally I am pretty careful and don't lose things, sure I misplace things in my room all the time, but don't really lose things. Sure somewhere in the back of my mind I worry a bit about the what if..., but that takes all the fun out of life. I just feel that you have to live and enjoy life. That means not carrying a cheap POS knife just in case it gets lost. Most any knife can be replaced if lost. Using some common sense and care will help you make sure that your knives stay with you.

I don't worry about losing an EDC. I think of it as "the potential for giving a random person a decent knife to use". Unless its a remote area.

I've found that when I carry better quality stuff , I loose less , this applies to pens, mechanical pencils , lites , tools and knives ( which in the final analysis are tools ) . I cant remember when I last lost a knife . You soon develop a felling for where your good toys are , proper carry arrangements help a lot too .

Maxpedition M2. It has a front cellphone pocket with a click opening and a large two-zipper-pull compartment behind it. There are two pen slots alongside the cellphone. The compartment has two small internal sections within the main section.

The belt loops are adjustable for different size belts, and very strong, and can snap off and on, if necessary. Underneath the belt loops is a hidden slot compartment you could put spare cash in, like a money belt.

Only problem is, it is a bit bulky, that is, it sticks out a couple of inches when it's really full. I was carrying a cellphone, flashlight (Inova X5T, then replaced that with an X1), Vic. Ranger, harmonica, pens, sugar tablets. I could have put a small folder in there, too.

I can't remember the last time I lost anything other than a screw that fell out of my knife yesterday.

I agree with CDF, you're less likely to lose something if it's expensive to replace.

I have several of THESE in various configurations that I take when I'm in the field, fishing, boating etc where I'm concerned about retention. If you remove the split ring and put about a foot of thin whipping line on them they are very easy to put on and take off a knife.

I was on a company outing where we went for a canoe ride. Well, as Murhy's law would have it I ended up with a guy who didn't know how to swim and had never been in a boat or canoe. He ran us up on some rocks in a rapids area, the canoe spun backwards and dumped us both in the drink. Of course he was on the rocks and only got a little wet - I was not, so I went under completely. When I got out of the water and restled the canoe to shore my Spyderco Chinook has hanging from my pants by the Gear Keeper.

That one incident paid for the 4 or 5 of them that I own.

Only when I pack for plane travel do I worry. Then I bring out the older and cheaper knives to pack for those who might pilfer the check-in baggage.

i lost a leatherman wave the first time i took it out the house- i think the belt loop on the nylon sheath it came in must have come apart. i almost vomited with despair as i had got it for a gift.

I lost a nice Swiss army knife my mother bought for me in switzerland, along with all my valuable art supplies and case. I left it on the roof of my car and drove away. :barf: :barf: some lucky sob made out good! I never lose track of any of my knives anymore.

I am not scared losing a knife and I am used walking with folders worth Euro 500 +
To me, being afraid of losing a knife, is like being afraid losing the shoes I walk on.
Never lost a knife either, kind of become one with them and I am aware of its presence at all time. I can image that losing a knife sucks.

Maybe it will help to carry your knife/folder in one place instead of carring it random at your body/clothes each time. In time you will get used to the feeling of it, carring it in the same place over and over again.

Good luck and may no person loose a knife ever again.

Regards. :)
