420 SS at 55 HRC is probably functional for the intended tasks, but not impressive in any sense. This being 2023.

420 is extremely tough though, which could be important. It’s pretty much unbreakable.

Also, remember that soldiers have a lot of time devoted to little tasks like boot polishing, bed-making, uniform pressing.

Sharpening a knife that never gets used is no big deal. (They’d have a pocket knife, too…)

Looks like a nice knife, but the price (100$+) is a bit hard to swallow all considered.
