I have been a member of bladeforums since May of 1999 and have never felt that I needed to post that anyone was not worth dealing with. In my opinion, the actions (or lack thereof) of Parish warrant such a post. He has a knife posted in the Knives: For Trade section that I was interested in, and e-mailed him on January 8th with a trade offer. He e-mailed me asking for more information. I sent him more information immediately. After I didn't receive a reply to my e-mail back, I e-mailed him again on January 10th asking him if he had received my e-mail. I then posted in his trade thread on January 11th that I had sent him two e-mails, asked him if his e-mail was working, and asked him to please get back to me. Since the 11th I have not heard back from him, and today noticed that he had sent his post BTTT. Whether he intentionally blew me off, or whether he is just a flake, I would definitely hesitate before dealing with Parish.

If you are interested in his post, look under Knives and Tools for Trade. The post is a DKW Sandshark under the user name Parish. Look up the post and judge for yourself.

I had a very similar situation with *****, who was trying to trade a Mini Commander. I offered my Sure Fire 8x via e-mail, and after several e-mail queries, he said he was finally ready to do the trade, and only had a couple more questions about the light. I immediately responded to him with the answers, and to let me know if he was still interested. Well, a few days go by with no response. I figured since he was fairly new with only 16 posts (as of today), he might have some apprehensions about trading off the net. In order to put him at ease, I sent him the following e-mail on 1-20 to make him feel more comfortable. I think this is a very generous offer, especially towards someone as new as he.

E-mail to ***** sent on 1-20-2003
****,

Not sure if you are still interested, but it seems like you aren't sure what you want to do. I tell you what I'll do. If you are interested in the light, I will ship it to you and let you try it for a week to see if you like it and still want to trade. If you do, then just send me the Mini Commander when you decide you like it, or just ship the light back to me if you don't like it. That way, you will be sure that you really want to do the trade. Let me know, so I can get the light out to you tomorrow. Give me your address and if you don't mind, a phone number where you can be reached, and I will ship it to you Priority Mail via USPS tomorrow.

Take care,

Mike

I feel like I went out on a limb to give him confidence and make a smoothe trade. I have to say, I am pretty put off by the lack of a response. At least he could have said he wasn't interested. Oh well. Kind of glad it didn't go through, because I really don't want another Mini Commander. Just don't care for the blunt tip and chisel edge, but you know how those "impulse" offers go. I just figured I would post here because the situation was similar to yours. I didn't want to do an entire thread, because he is pretty new, and maybe hasn't learned the trading/selling etiquette yet.

Edited on 2/01/03 to add: I e-mailed him again just after writing this post (maybe I should have waited in the first place to get an explanation), and it turns out it was just an oversight on his part. He apologized, and told me he could have sworn he sent me a response thanking me for my generous offer, but a coworker offered him a deal he couldn't pass up. One in which he got what he wanted, but got to keep the knife. I know this situation would still tick some people off, but like I said, my offer was really an impulse offer, and I really don't want another Mini Commander. Anyway, instead of erasing this whole post, and making new viewers wonder what I originally said, I just marked out his user name and real name. After all, he is new to the forums, and it would be unfair for him to have a bad mark on his reputation for a simple oversight, not a blatant blow-off.

Medic1210, I definetly hear you on that one. I was pretty reserved about posting Parish under the bad, he is also a newer member, but I thought under the circumstances it was warranted. If it keeps others from going through what I went through, I think it was the right move. Thanks,

Ben Kelly

I have stopped sending offers to some people even though they often have good stuff to trade simply because they never reply, interested or not. I answer all offers, even if I'm not interested, with a polite "no thanks". If someone doesn't reply it tells me they are someone I don't want to do business with anyway. I have exchanged emails with most of the guys I've dealt with here over the years, on lots of subjects, not just knives. Put them on your ignore list if they rub you the wrong way, I do!

(I also didn't want to start a whole new thread, but thanks for letting me vent here).

I hear you guys. Lack of courtesy is bad enough, but this type of behavior is downright offensive. No, it's not dishonest or unethical to blow someone off, but it certainly isn't proper either. The Bladeforums community is better than that.

There's one member who is very, very active in the for sale forums who will never get an offer from me due to his lack of response to a very friendly inquiry I sent his way a few months ago. In the long run, it will be his loss, not mine. A simple 30 seconds at the keyboard would've avoided this and might have even resulted in a polite dialogue, or, who knows - maybe even a friendship. Wouldn't be the first time that's happened here...

Courtesy doesn't end at the keyboard, folks.

By the way, this isn't the first time this general topic has come up... Look here

I too have repeatedly email parish to no avail. It is rediculos how some people act here.

I also called and talked to him, He told me he would email me later on but guess what heppened:rolleyes:
