Can Parks #50 be used with 5160?

I noticed on Darren Ellis' site that he recommends a slow quench oil with O1, 5160 and L6 -any negative consequences of using a fast quenching oil with 5160?

I'd rather not have 2 quench tanks.

Thanks!

If by negative you mean warp,break,crack....Yes there are negative effects of a too harsh quench. You don't need two tanks, but you will need to pour the #50 back into the can and put the AAA in the tank. It is a good excuse to screen your oil and clean the crud from your tank.

what's the big deal? I have two quench tanks...thinking of maybe adding a third and fourth - so I can use both slow and fast, in both vertical and horizontal tanks. It's just mild steel and oil. Probably the most important part of the knifemaking process. Spend a little on it. :D :p

Very good advice Stacy. I don't need to, but often drain off my oil and clean out any salt flakes and other deposits in the bottom of the tank. Those quench tanks that could have anything from mastodon bones to Jimmy Hoffa in the bottom of them due to the time since the maker last emptied them should become a thing of the past if we want optimum results from our quenches.
