My brand new Evenheat KF22.5 just got delivered (YEAH!!!), so I am really just starting down the heat treating path. I'm in the process of ordering all the other things that go along with it, and I was wondering how many blades can one typically expect to quench with a 5 gal pail of Parks 50? I just to make sure I order enough (shipping is a bit cheaper if I buy more than 1).

Thanks in advance, everyone!

If kept covered from the elements and contamination by leaves/dirt/debris, and the oil is screened every now and then to get the scale off the bottom.....You will get many years of use and thousands of blades from 5 gallons of commercial oil. The biggest enemies are water and burning the oil by quenching overheated blades.

I am still using Bill Moran's quench oil. I have no idea how old it is, but suffice to say it is probably 20 years old, or older.

They make an additive to "rejuvenate" your #50, but i seriously doubt that most of us use the stuff often enough for that to be an issue as long as you don't scorch your oil.
