Anyone know where I can get a couple gallons of Parks #50 quench oil.
My normal supplier is out and I had an accident with a hot blade and a plastic bucket. What a mess.

OK!!! I know the plastic bucket thing was stupid I know better but it happened its over. (All over the floor that is)
Now where can I get some Parks #50? I kinda knew that why I needed it was going to get more attention than where I can get it. If you want attention around here do something stupid.( Hold my beer and watch this, kinda thing)

Hey Andy - Don't know where you can get Parks, but I have a quote from Houghton for Houghto-Quench K which is just about the same speed. Since they make the stuff, it's not likely they'll run out. I'll email you our local distributor info and the pricing quote if you like. It's 6 months old now, so I don't know how much prices might have changed.

AcridSaint, would you shoot an email or PM to me with the same info ?

I can tell you where to get a metal bucket. Sorry about your pain. I do that stuff to. I am learning to do it less and less. Go to the secondhand stores and find yourself an old pressure cooker. Solid construction with a great sealing lid cheap

Darren Ellis is the only place to get P-50. Does anybody know why he's been out for so long????
He wont answer my email???

I don't know much about Houghton products but I'm fairly certain Park's 50 is the fastest quench oil made. Anybody have some actual numbers, to compare?

I've called Darren and left messages. I know they got flooded out pretty bad, probably still recovering from the water damage. Its been on back-order for some time.

Hi Don - Houghton lists Hought-Quench K at 7-9 sec and it was the quench recommended to me by their staff when I called and told them it would be used mostly for 10xx series steels.

Here's a link to the datasheet:

If you wanted to go faster you could go with their polymer aqua-quench product which is mixed in water. With this product you can adjust the quench speed by adding more or less by volume.

David - I'll shoot you an email with the quote and info (can't PM here) but you may need to speak with a different rep for your region.

Thanks, AcridSaint. I feel Park's#50 is a bit faster than the Houghton K, but I could be wrong.

I talked to Scott at Houghton about their polymer's (recommended to me by Howard Clark) but they are too high maintenance for me and the P-50 is simple and plenty fast.

Don - I believe you're right, the Park is 7-8 sec from what I recall. I don't think that it would be noticeable even on something like 1095, but there's something to be said for learning one product and sticking with it.

Does anyone have the speed specs on the data sheet for Park 50?
I had no answer to my tech service request at Park.

I've been craving a simple side by side comparison on speed specs. yet.

See Scott McKenzie post #12.

Post #9 in thread has a link to a lot of information on commercial quenchants from different manufacturers and somewhere on Don Fogg's site(s) there is supposed to be the Park technical data on #50 and AAA. Park tests the speed of their quenchants differently than most other manufacturers so the numbers are not comparable. I was told by Scott McKenzie, even the tests run using the same methods had enough variation the numbers weren't hard and fast.

There is some more quenchant info here... particularly Scott McKenzie on pure canola oil... post #12 http://forums.dfoggknives.com/index.php?showtopic=10108
