Friends,
My 5th Annual Going to the Dogs Sale is now over and I want to thank everyone who bought a knife or otherwise supported it. We started way back on Sept. 10th here: https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/afaustin’s-5th-annual-going-to-the-dogs-sale.1519468/ and continued through Parts 2, 3, 4, 5, and now 6 to wrap it up. This was a long one but well worth it—27 knives sold and a gross sales total of $1256.00. I don’t subtract the PP or shipping fees so the pups get it all. I also want to repeat my thanks to the buyers, many of whom kicked in a little extra for the pups. But wait, there’s more....
As mentioned in Part 4 of the sale, I got a big boost this year from my friend Phil (Phaint here on BF), who very generously donated 3 excellent knives. Two sold, and Phil again showed his generosity by asking that I save the remaining knife for next year’s sale. Phil and his wife, by the way, are the proud owners themselves of two great rescue dogs.
This sale was also the beneficiary of another incredibly kind and generous gift. Kirk H., my long time good friend, great knife man, and one of the premier Bark River collectors on the planet, sent me $200.00 to add to the total. That brings it up to $1456.00, and I’m going to nudge that up to the nice round number of $1500.00.
I mentioned in Part 1 that the proceeds this year would go to one or more of the biggest animal welfare organizations in Austin, who have been so involved in the Hurricane Harvey rescue efforts, with priority going to any which could come up with a match for my donation. Well, two of them came through---Austin Pets Alive! and the Austin Humane Society. At APA!, they need an ultrasound machine for their clinic and a generous donor has offered to match any funds they raise to that end, including a donation from this sale. And at AHS, they’re having a Day of Giving on Nov. 28th and the Petco Foundation is going to match whatever they collect on that day. They’ve arranged it so that my donation will count as an (early) Day of Giving donation and be matched.
So, I split my $1500.00 total into two $750.00 donations—one for APA! and one for AHS. And they will each be matched, so each organization will realize $1500.00. In sum then, with all the support from the buyers, and Phil, and Kirk, and the matches, the result is $3000.00 going to the pups!
I made both donations online by credit card last night, and today received from APA! and AHS very nice letters and photos of their work with the Hurricane Harvey animals. I’m posting those below.
So thanks again, everybody, and thanks again to Spark and the mods who allow this to happen. Getting to combine two great loves of mine—dogs and knives—is a real treat, and I’ve truly enjoyed this annual event.
Andrew

Dear Andrew and BladeForums,
The past couple of months at Austin Pets Alive! have been truly inspirational. We cannot believe the outpouring of support from people in our community and around the country, including you all. Your support will contribute to our ultrasound machine fund allowing us to properly diagnose ill animals in the clinic. And to double the effect you have, your $750 gift will be matched by another APA! donor.
During Harvey, we have rescued over 3,500 animals since the hurricane hit the Houston area on August, 25th. With your generosity we will be able to care for these animals until they find their forever homes. Here are a few behind the scenes pictures to give you a sense of what's been going on.
On behalf of the staff, volunteers, and animals -new and old- Thank you for your support.
Warmly,
Logan Anderson
