Partial Disassembly of the Caly3 - Need Help!

I opened this forum to post this question, then I saw Sal's post in this thread that the Caly3 does not have washers!

My favorite knife is my VG-10, G-10 PE Caly3 (UKPK runs a close second). I recently acquired a CF/ZDP Caly3. I was very excited about the ZDP blade, as I had found the ZDP blade on my the Caly Jr to be an amazing slicer.

Unfortunately, when I picked up my new knife, I was immediately repulsed by the chalky feel of the carbon fiber scales! I once had a Boker with CF scales that felt slick, but had a sort of bumpy feel to them. This is what I was expecting. Perhaps the CF will smooth with carry and feel better, but I'm not too sure.

Then I had a brainstorm. Perhaps I can trade out the VG-10 blade on my G-10 knife for the ZDP blade and put the VG-10 blade on the CF handles. The only part about this plan that worries me is the disassembly and reassembly. Obviously, the knife is pinned and I'm not prepared to deal with that.

What I'm wondering is: Can I remove the blade pivot and slide the blade out and slide in a different blade? Has anyone tried anything this daring? Any tips/advise?

Hi Jag-Engr,

I would discourage it. These knives are assembled by master knifemakers. They are fine tuned in assembly. Unless you have a much experience, you will more than likely end up with two knives that do not work as well as they did before you took them apart.

Yes, it can be done (I've successfully taken the blade out of my Ocelot's handle for cleaning and put it back in). However, I wouldn't suggest doing the blade swap you mentioned! Sal is a wise man, and his advice is spot on. There needs to be a precise fit between the lock bar's tooth and the blade tang's notch, and I believe that those parts are hand-fitted in Seki (Japan), when the knives are made. If one model's lock bar tooth didn't precisely fit the other's blade tang notch, it could be a potentially painful situation!

I think I better leave them alone. The carbon fiber is starting to grow on me, though.
