First off, if there is a thread out there that I couldn't find with a partial tang tutorial, then please shoot me that link so I can just look through that.

So I'm wondering, are bolsters generally part of a partial tang knife? And if so, is the soldering method still done? AND if so, how is the metal around the solder area heated safely to not ruin the heat treating of the blade?

Is the regular epoxy method used with maybe 1 or 2 rivets through the partial tang?

Has anyone ever done a half partial tang...where the tang is visible on either the edge side or spine side, but not visible on the opposite side?

I'm sure I'll have more of these questions as (if) discussion unfolds.

There is a parial tang thread on here some where but I am on my blackberry and its a bit of a pain to search the link down for you right now. If I remember right the tang was epoxied and pinned in place.

Multiple questions:

Either a bolster or a guard is normally used on a hidden ( partial) tang knife.

The bolster/guard is soldered on with a soft solder, like Staybrite. The solder melts at a bit below 400F, so the blade temper will be fine. Wrapping a damp cloth around the blade can prevent accidents from overzealous application of heat.

Epoxy is poured into the hole in the handle and the tang is inserted. Clean off the overflow before it is fully set.

A single rivet through the tang is common.

Do you mean partial tang like on kitchen knives that have a tang the length of the handle but only part of the width so you can see it on top but not on bottom, or hidden tang style?

Mainly just partial tang, a butt cap is another discussion for a hidden tang. I was mainly curious about soldering the bolster/guard.
