Groundrules for the pass-around

  1. Must have 100+ posts in the HI forums to be eligible.
  2. Must agree to post a report in this thread. Report should describe condition of knife as received, what you did with/to it, your thoughts on the knife, and condition as sent out. We are going to put years of wear on these knives in weeks.
  3. Must be in the US (Otherwise we will get heavy shipping costs, delays, and may lose knives in customs.
  4. You agree to send the knife off to the next person on the list within one week of receipt. Knife is to be shipped in sheath. securely and safely packaged. You need to get the address of the next person on the list yourself. Use PM or e-mail if possible.
  5. No complaints if moderators rearrange the list order. We might do this to spread the knives around, to get particular feedback more quickly, or for other reasons. Moderators may flex other rules also. Work with us.
  6. If you meet the qualifications and are interested, post in this thread to get added to the list.
  7. Try not to trash the knives. No tossing them into fires, using them for throwing practice, battoning through rocks, etc. We want the next reviewer to have a chance to use and review them as knives also. Normal wear and tear for a hard-use knife is encouraged though,
  8. If you would like the reviewers to address a particular aspect of the knife post your requests here where the reviewers can see them.
  9. If you would like to discuss the ethics of kamis drawing inspiration from western designs please go over to the discussion thread at http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...nspired-passarounds-–-discussion-thread to do so. This passaround thread is not the place for that discussion.

I'd like to sign up for this passaround, Ive seen this blade design before but have never held one and would love to see how it holds and handles
ohh crap 83 posts, well Ill try to get in on the next round

You're in, Issun. First responder to the passaround threads. As a frequent contributer to the forum you have already demonstrated the ability to give good feedback. Send me your mailing address.

Howard, this looks a LOT like my Russel that my dad handed down to me. I would love to see how it fairs against my Russel. I'll post a picture of it later on (probably after I get this HI one if I am picked for the pass-around). Thanks.

Jack

Is that a Nessmuk style, or a Canadian belt knife style?
I like it.
I like knives, period. Especially if they are HI made.
Personally, I love the Nepalese take on Western knife designs. They really know how to give a nice spin to a classic design. Just look at the HI Kerambit, I love mine.
I'm still itching to get an AK Bowie.
About the heaviest use I could guarantee right now would be dressing small game and kitchen use.

Ive still not heard from ShadowchaserUFP.... what do I do if I dont have an address by the time I've made my review and the week is up? (spoiler: the knife is totaly awesome)

Jaymo, were you wanting to participate in the passaround?

It looks like ShadowchaserUFP has e-mail set up. Click on his username above one of his posts, and send him an e-mail asking for the shipping address. Give him an e-mail account of yours to send the information to.

sorry guys I missed the PM. Sent a PM to Issun and I'll send him an email tonight after I get home from school (around 10 central time).

Sadly it looks like my week with the HI belt knife is up and I need to write my review, say good bye and send it off to shadowchaserUFP.

Condition of the knife on arrival: Fantastic! the knife has some slight rust spots on the otherwise magic stone polish, but humidity happens

the edge is one of the sharpest that Ive seen on a polished HI blade, it cuts paper neatly and will take off some arm hair (not so neatly) a few strokes across a strop or sandpaper covered mousepad would make this thing shaving sharp. I dont have the means of repolishing the blade so I refrained from trying, but maybe future users will.

what I did with it... the knife was extremely easy to carry and very useful in opening packages cutting food and other miscellaneous every day uses, but this is a knife for an outdoorsman so I went fishing.

The knife was so awesome that it scared all the fish away and I was unable to see how well it could fillet... but it sure was great at cutting lines! The knife feels great in hand; it’s got the perfect size and weight to be a useful go to knife for just about any small task.
P8233569.jpg

The handle swells nicely making this the most confortable small knife that I’ve ever handled. The blade is 1/8 of an inch thick at the base and tapers to a fine point.

The sheath looks great and securely holds the knife, although the snap on strap is purely decoration
P8243577.jpg

My similar HI RK knife had the same issue with the strap that I "fixed" you can see that it does not look very pretty but the strap now holds the knife in physically when closed. I did not make this modification on the belt knife.

The prince has done a great job replicating the classic style in these knives; they are very thin and light with excellent handles. The sheath could use some work to make it less ornamental, but overall I think everyone should get at least one of these!

almost forgot

Final condition: same as when it arrived with a tad more rust from fingerprints that I forgot to wipe off.... if you have a buffing wheel or something it would come off in a second, I don’t want to risk marring the finish

Would you add me to the list for this one also?

Issum, what model is that HI skinner?

You're added!
They're called the RK special... not sure why, but it's the kamis interpretation of the schrade sharpfinger skinning knife. H.I has made them before. Some in elk ...etc.....very nice.

The RK special looks like it has a thicker blade than the Sharpfinger. That could be very good. Easier to sharpen. I love my Sharpfinger, but it can be a real hemorrhoid to sharpen.
I'd love to try out the knife that's being passed around. I just don't think I have time right now. All the small game in my area has disappeared since squirrel season opened.

Got this in Saturday and to be honest I won't get a chance to work with it until Thursday evening at the latest. Just too darn busy any more with work and night school! Upon first inspection I did see that it is remarkably like my Russel Canda Belt knife (that my father left to me). The main difference I've seen so far is the blade is not sharpened all the way up the blade towards the handle. Will comment later on when I get a chance to work with it and also will have pics of both blades.

wildmanh please pm me your address and I will get this blade in the mail to you by the end of the week. Sorry it has taken so long but honestly I've been swamped and not able to test it out until last night and today.

I just sent you an email with my mailing address. If you need a little extra time with the knife and the others are okay with it, feel free to keep it a little longer.

I plan on getting this in the mail on Saturday morning. Thank you for your patience, life is just so hectic anymore. Wondering when it will slow down a bit. LOL
