Passaround 2

My wife sent this out yesterday Wildmanh so you should have it by the weekend. Thanks for your patience! You will enjoy the knife although I thought the sheath to be lacking (will expand in my review later on).

I picked up #2 an hour ago from the post office. This knife really needs a new sheath and I already have something in mind. After getting it, I cleaned it up, then used it to spread peanut butter and honey on Rice cakes for a snack. After the snack I touched up the edge. In about an hour I'll start dinner of Potato Salad and Grilled chicken. The knife will be used to cut everything up. Will keep everyone posted on how it works.

does peanut butter and rice cakes make it dull? :)

Nope, makes it sharper.....
The peanut butter makes great stropping rouge and the rice cake makes a great sharpening puck. Add them together and you have an edible sharpening medium. :D

LOL!! You guys sure crack me up!! I didn't like the edge that the knife came to me with, so I touched it up. After cutting up Potatoes, Onions, and Pickles for the Potato salad, I've decided that the blade needs some more work. Thinking I may give it a reasonably sharp but toothy edge.

That is a great blade design. I'll be interested to see what your thoughts are Heber and what you come up with for a sheath.

gonna try to get my review out this evening guys. Sorry for the delays. Heber, I've an idea for the sheath if you have not started on it yet. I kind of like the design that my Russel has and will include some pics.

Jack, I'd love to hear your idea's for the sheath. Will be starting it in the next few days..... Am looking forward to your review!

A comparison between the HI Passaround #2 and my Russel Canada Belt Knife.

As you can see from all of the photos, these two knives are uncannily similar to each other.

Once out of the sheath you can really see just how alike they are. In the above photo the HI is the one on the top.

One of the most notable differences is the HI's convex edge does not have a delineating line like the Russel's flat grind.

Surprisingly enough the spine on the HI is just slightly smaller than that on my Russel. Usually the HI knives have a noticeably larger spine profile. the HI is on the bottom in this photo.

The blade itself is slightly larger than my Russell. The nose of the blade was also shaped a bit differently with my Russell being more pointed than the HI.

This was supposed to be an edge-on view with an attempt to show that the HI blade is not sharpened next to the grip, unlike my Russell which is sharpened the entire length of the blade. Not sure if this was purposeful or not.

These views show the difference in the sheaths. As stated earlier in this thread, the sheath is not to be desired. The retaining strap is inefficient and actually does nothing to retain the knife in the sheath. It quite easily slips out of the sheath if the knife is inverted and there is ANY jarring movement. I much prefer my Russell's sheath and would love to see WildmanH replicate this type of sheath for this knife.

I found this knife to be a joy to use in handability. It fit into the hand quite comfortably and felt like a natural extension of the hand. This is not a heavy hitting type of knife but is instead a great utility design which lends itself equally well to such chores as skinning, cutting rope, cutting your meal, or even some whittling if you are a mind to.

I did not attempt to sharpen this blade as I am not really setup to sharpen a convex edge very well. It came to me sharp (except for the first 1/2" near the grip) and worked fine for cutting light duty work around the house. Hopefully I did not dull it to much before I sent it out to WildmanH!

I would consider buying this design from HI if I were in need of a general purpose utility knife for around the house or campsite. It is a definite proven design that lends itself nicely to the task at hand!

Thanks for the opportunity to work with this blade. It was enjoyable!

nice review, good to see the HI version and the original side by side!

just a suggestion: take pictures outside in daylight, it makes everything look soo much nicer
also did you see if the HI fit inside of the Russell sheath?
oh and your second image is upside-down

Jack, thanks for comparing the origenal and H.I.'s version. :)

BTW I just touched up the edge of the knife on my belt sander using a worn out 320 grit slack belt. Don't worry I didn't get it hot and I kept the convex edge. It's now a toothy hair flicking sharp. Going to test it out on some home grown tomatoes. Don't worry, I'll take pics. ;)

Well I don't have enough posts to get in on this, but this look like a great knife! I like my kuks but would love to see more of these offered in the future.
