Passing time on my Work Breaks

heh. i'm still trying to save up for my upper too. BCM flat top 1/7 twist 16" gov't profile... hopefully i'll have it by Easter. hopefully.

Looks great TTD. I totally recommend Daniel Defense for your upper. Superb quality, not that bad on the price end either. search around on Gunbroker.com and you can find deals. The 1/7 chrome lined cold hammer forged barrel will out live you, and your kids most likely. the H buffer and BCG are excellent as well.

If you dont go for DD, I'd look at BCM.

Think you will go mid length or carbine for your upper?

I am going Carbine as I have the matching OD Green Magpul carbine forearm piece. I have the Spike Tacital Buffer & matching spring and it is heavy version and has Excellant reviews :D
I can get a better deal on DD than GB if I just ask ;) I just hate to use favors plus I dont have the $$ just yet

Sweet! Looks great. I prefer the Noveske QD endplates, as all my slings use QD attachments.

You need to slap a BCM middy (or carbine if that's your thing) on that sucker. They still have them marked down. Had an good many AR's from most of the manufacturers and the only ones I'll blow my money on anymore are BCM, DD, and Noveske.

Looking good Tony. I put some FDE Magpul furniture on my backup AR last night. Love it.

Yeah lowers are definitely the cheap fix. It's when you start digging into uppers that the $$$$ starts coming in. I'm keeping my eyes peeled for a 20" medium-ish weight upper (not bull barrel) for more of a precision build that isn't too heavy to carry around.

That looks great Tony.

Are you going to run the Magpul MS2 sling?

I typically recommend BCM, Daniel Defense, and Colt uppers. However, Spikes Tactical is doing some really exciting budget uppers. They are selling complete and correct midlength uppers through AIM Surplus that come with a BCG and one of their ST2 heavy buffers. They have 16" middies now which is probably the best all-around upper configuration you can buy and they will have lightweight middies and 14.5" middies soon.

I wish I could build ARs at my office without ending up on the news.

Thanks Matt, I was really impressed with the guys at Spike's Tactical,I ordered the buffer, spring,ar tool, and one od pmag from them....I received my order3 days later.

Wow.. thanks for the reference to aimsurplus Matt. I REALLY like that spikes tactical FF BAR quad rail. Looks good, has multiple QD slots and its at a great price. What's not to like about that?

Looks like you could get a spikes complete upper (with buffer), lower receiver, DD lower parts kit, DSA buffer tube kit, and an MOE stock all for less than $800. Got yourself a good rifle right there..

Since it sounds like you already have gear for the carbine gas system (not that you couldn't sell the carbine MOE and buy a midlength MOE, or at least that is what I would do ;) ), you might want to check out a 14.5" barrel with a pinned muzzle device. The 14.5" barrel is better match to the carbine gas system in terms of dwell time. It isn't as over gassed as a 16" carbine barrel. The Spikes heavy buffer will help you tune the shorter gas system.

Best of luck with the build!

yes Matt I want to run the MS2 sling.... once I scratch up the funds to buy one after the upper....
I was looking at the 14.5" complete upper with the extended muzzle brake as well ... thanks for the info

all I know is I want a 1/7 twist chrome lined barrel(DD-LMT-SpikeTactical-Colt)???? What I 've been looking at
or I'd take a 1/9 Hbar both 16" in length (Colt)??? only Hbar I liked
& a Good Brand

BCM 16" mid-length - you will thank me... no honestly, all joking aside - you will thank me...

blake

OK - I read matthewdanger's post and realized that you're leaning into the carbine length gas system. not a total mistake but to my mind the ML is the way to go. No matter, but with that in mind I can't disagree with MD when he says:

...14.5" barrel with a pinned muzzle device. The 14.5" barrel is better match to the carbine gas system in terms of dwell time. It isn't as over gassed as a 16" carbine barrel. The Spikes heavy buffer will help you tune the shorter gas system..."

Absolutely bang on... but stick with BCM!!!

I am building this AR with Carbine in mind from the start .
I've narrowed it down to LMT,DD,Colt , & I guess BCM .
be a while before I have cash to purchase though
