My latest offering is another one of my standard hunting knives, this one with Patagonian Rosewood handles. It is also called "Willka" or "Curupay", which means "sacred". It's a new wood for me, one that is obviously very straight grained but has nice color to it. The steel is 52100 bearing steel, sourced from The New Jersey Steel Baron. The heat treatment I use is quite involved, but necessary to bring out the best 52100 has to offer. This consists of normalizing, thermal cycling, pre-quenching, soaking at a precise hardening temp, quenching down to sub zero temperatures, and triple tempering. The hardness of this blade is ~64HRC with a very fine microstructure of martensite and a very fine array of small chromium rich carbides that aid in wear resistance. While this is a very high hardness not normally found on hunting knives, the very fine grain structure that results from the heat treatment allows for a very tough blade and edge. With that said, I caution against using such a hard, thin blade against bone, or torquing the edge into hard material, as chipping can occur. But with normal use and some care, the edge retention is really amazing! Not only will this knife unzip a deer quicker than a blast from Han Solo's broom handled Mauser laser blaster, it works very well in the kitchen as a paring knife or small utility knife. The grind is a full flat grind with a pre sharpened edge width of only 0.005". The edge angle is 20° inclusive (10° per side) finished with an Atoshi 2k waterstone. This edge is unique, a new method I've just recently become aware of that is only accomplished with certain equipment. The edge was apexed at 10° per side using a 1k waterstone, then polished with a 2k waterstone. Then the angle is dropped by a fraction of a degree, and then the progression repeated. This essentially knocks the shoulder off of the previous angle, making for a smoother cut. Not quite a convex edge, but close to it.
