Pala scrounged a patang from Bhutan and had Bura make a replica and this is what we got. I'd guess we might say the patang is the khukuri of Bhutan. The king wears one for whatever that might be worth.

It's 21 inches and 36 ounces and I guess the pix will speak for the rest of the knife. If anybody wants one sign up. The price will be $195 delivered to your door.

Forgot to add. The one pictured is already gone to an "on top of things" forumite.

Bill,

It looks like you just reinvented the Gladius. You should put something next to it for scale. It is alot bigger then it looks.

That's exactly what came to my mind when I saw it, n2s. I thought this should be named the HI Gladius -- but then some expert would jump on me and said, "that ain't no Gladius it's a patang from Bhutan."

I was just going to say that. It looked so cute, and then I saw the beast was 21"

FWIW, one of the easiest and handiest ways to show scale with things like this, when one doesn't have a yardstick/meterstick/tapemeasure handy, is to put a dollar bill in the picture.
They are roughly 6" and people's brains have an easy time figuring out the scale of any picture from one. Just a little thing I picked up from archaeology classes and fieldwork.

Get some more pics that show perspective , maybe someone holding it . That blade is calling to me , but I'm not sure about the size .

This must be what you would call a short, short sword.

Been searching and find only references to the name Patang.

http://www.vikingsword.com/ethsword/tibet/index.html

Above link calls a Tibetan Sword a Patang. Nice jeweled long sword.

This next link looks pretty close, but is called a Naga Sword-Daos

http://www.vikingsword.com/ethsword/nagadao/index.html#anchor931593

I haven't been able to find a more descriptive link, comparable to the one on the forum.

Any suggestions. Would like to narrow down the history/background.

WOW!! Uncle - your photos are terrific! Great detail shot on the guard.

HMMMM-

If the small Tibetan Sword is 31" and this is 21 inchea... If Bura put a Tibetan sword handle with horn on this but shortened the knife handle an inch and a half or two, retaining the foot long blade but dumping the fuller to match the Tibetan sword's configuration... making it a left hand dagger en suite. Must take extra medication.

Uncle,
Have you heard anything about the wood model I sent you? My buddy has the cash ready to go whenever the khukuri arrives.
God Bless.
Terry

Wasn't even looking for it when I came across this a few minutes ago:

Terry, I never hear anything. Either the knife shows up or it doesn't.

Pen, the new camera helps.

I hear from Nepal that "we are having trouble with the digital camera you sent us." I wonder why -- and revenge is sweet sometimes.

"HI Gladius" is right, sweeeet. Always wanted a gladius... Now I have to figure out how to get in in the house with minimal fuss from mi esposo ;)

Cabbage chopper or watermelon cutter..:D

Or have you already used those for khuks?

Uncle, I'm definitely interested in getting one of these someday. Money is a bit of an issue right now, but if you get these in sometime in the future, I'll grab one for sure. (Or 2 if I hit the lottery or something. . . :D )

Oh, and just to clarify - this is double-edged, correct?
