Patina on L6 or O1?

I'm thinking of having Patton knives make me a knife, which I would want to develop a patina. I could just go the route of 1095, since I know what kind of patina I can get on it from RAT and Rat Cutlery knives I own. However, they'll also make the same knife in L6 or O1. Can anyone comment on what sort of patina I could expect from either of those steels? Other comments on the utility of these steels are welcome too. TIA.

This is a knife made by Bryan Breeden here on BF, the model is the HandyLittleKnife. it's 4.5" blade / 4.5" handle - 01 steel.
I put a patina on this using a mix of vinegar & mustard

I like that! I was already leaning toward O1 and that looks good. BTW is that natural canvas micarta?

I have a Gossman PSK in O1 and it takes a patina real fast. It's a great little knife in the kitchen and even though it patina's fast, I don't seem to have to sharpen the blade too much. Tknife's forum knife had the best patina I've seen on a knife and I think it's O1.

i dont really care for most O1 patinas, they usually dint look natural to me. while L6 is one ofmy favorite steels, it dosent really patina all that much.

XMP yes that is natural or as it is also called tan micarta that I get from POPS knife supply.
Thanks for the liking the patina on the knife I did for Coaldigger.
They easy to do and make the blade look so cool I think.

These are both 01 steel. The top knife was dijon mustard, then I cleaned it up rubbed it with 0000 steel wood and soaked it in lime juice overnight. The bottom was soaked in vinegar overnight and then steel wood'ed and soaked in lime juice overnight

All those steels will patina. What the patina will look like depends on what you are cutting. This applies to letting it patina on it's own. L6 and O1 are very similar in their make up so a forced patina will basically darken the blade.

These are O-1 and were done with vinegar and the polymer gel used to retain water in plant pots. Its is not as durable as the natural patina you get from cutting meat, but it seems to be on a par with what you get from fruit. It seems to also be about what you get from things like mustard, but then many mustards have vinegar in there.

O1 tends to grow grey in its patina. I tend to let mine develop on their own. My peacemaker sees a lot of kitchen duty and the kids aren't the best at wiping my knives down after using :( So every once in a while I take a green scrubby with comet powder to them when they get too blotchy and that just sort of blends in the dark splotches with the rest of the patina. Here is a shot I just took of the knife as it is in my block. Sorry Bryan - I didn't oil up that wonderful osage orange handle to make it look purty and it looks like this puppy needs another cleaning!. Great blade for kitchen and belt carry!

The nice thing is, if you don't like your patina, just use 1000 grit sandpaper to take it off and start over, or keep shiny!
