So i have been working on a knife made out of Admiral's 1075/1080 steel and got it all shaped out and ground. For whatever reason i decided to test out a patina on the unheat-treated blade and soaked it in white distilled vinegar. After two hours no patina had appeared, what's up with that?

P.S.- i have successfully patina-ed moras in the past using the same vinegar.

You can try warming the vinegar up, it is more agressive at higher temperatures. It also sometimes helps to soak the blade, scrub it down with degreased steel wool or scotch brite, and soak it again. It may behave differently in the etchant after it has been heat treated so don't put too much weight on the results you get beforehand.

Okay thanks, my main concern was that i was sent a different steel than i had ordered, so i may try some other stuff.

With Admiral that would not be unheard of.Put a dab of yellow mustard on it and let it sit a few min,and see if it leave a dark spot.

I've had good results with vinegar on a couple knives post-HT. One was a forced patina, the other was massive rust removal that resulted in a nice forced patina. I had some mustard result in a uneven finish pre-HT on a knife made from an old saw blade. I'm gonna re-do the mustard on another knife post-HT.

The mustard began to work, but not as aggressively as it had on my high carbon mora blades which i believe are 1095, not all that different in composition.
