Pattern, Main clip, secondary sheepsfoot/wharncliffe?

So, the "What would the men of our families have carried?" thread got me thinking about a knife that I could carry and people in my family would know it as MY knife, one that would be handed down and cherished. And I don't believe I have one that fits the bill, though as a knife nut I realize that probably most of us have too many knives to ever have that "one". But it got me thinking more specifically about what traditional pattern I would prefer, as I don't have many.

I love my Swiss Army Knives, my Opinels, and my Case SBJ. But don't think any of them qualify. Needs a longer main blade, and as much as I love Wharncliffes, I'd want it as a secondary. I looked through a few threads, and browsed Case's current lineup and didn't find it.

So overall what I'm looking for:
3.5-4"
Main blade is a clip, (Doesn't HAVE to be, could be a pointy drop point, or something similar, but no spear points or anything. I like "stabby")
Secondary Wharncliffe, or barring that sheepsfoot. But I prefer the wharnie.
Good Carbon steel (1095, CV, even D2 possibly)
Natural handle material (I love a nice wood grain as much as nice jigged bone, and more natural colors too, no bright blue/green)
The slimmer the better, I love both thin blades, and thin handles. But I'm flexible here.

While searching I found the Case Wharncliffe Trapper which is actually pretty close, but I'm not convinced. If a nice Wharncliffe Muskrat existed that might do it, but I didn't find anything. And to be honest, I haven't ruled out a Stockman. They've never quite done it for me, but maybe I just haven't met "the one" :P

Anyone know of something in this criteria?

Boy are you talking to the choir with me with this thread. I have three of the Case Wharnie mini-trappers and they are my go to knives for around the yard, fly fishing, hiking, everyday, etc. Not wild about the Case SS but it works. The the full sized Case Wharnie Trapper was too big for me and I gifted to a man who actually is a trapper. There are no commercial knives that fit your requirements. I have a nice custom Alsdorf that does but it is at a different price point. I would love to see both a 3 1/2" and 3 3/4 or 7/8" Wharnie Trapper in 1095, CV, D2, etc. The slimmer the better here, too. Threads about Wharnie trappers come up all the time but the knife makers don't seem to be following them. You would think that one of the big boys - GEC, Scagel, CSC, Case (other than the Bose wharnie); and, Queen, etc., would make this pattern in carbon. A slimline 3 1/2" wharnie mini-trapper along with a 3 7/8'ish version would be the only knives that I would need. (No want, mind you).

That's a pattern that is off my radar, did Case make them in CV? I betting that Queen did it in D2 as well.

Case made Hawbakers in the late '70s and early '80s. They were all in carbon steel. They're vintage and collectable, so finding one with the color of bone you like is difficult, and you'll pay a lot for one.

I'm not aware of any other Hawbakers in carbon steel except for Schrade, but these are old and extremely rare. The Furtaker muskrat from GEC is similar, but beefier than a Hawbaker.

Queen has made some Hawbakers under their own name, but all that I've seen were in "420 stainless". They've also produced some under the Schatt and Morgan name, but only in 420HC. They've also made them for Robeson (420) and Colonel Coon (420). They also made some for Northwoods in D2, but these seem pretty rare and hard to track down.

The best, easily findable Hawbaker is probably the Canal Street, in 14-4CrMo.

The king of Hawbakers is the Case/Tony Bose 2004 collaboration, in ATS-34. These are somewhat uncommon and fairly expensive.

You can always do it yourself.

GEC/Northfield/Tidioute make both the "Hawbaker" muskrat (they call it a Furtaker Muskrat) as well as the Furtaker Trapper in 1095 and various handle materials on their 4-1/8" equal end frame.

Here's the muskrat in yellow rose bone

And here is their Wharncliffe trapper in burnt stag

I am not sure how it would look but I have been thinking about a Case/Bose Norfolk with a reversed blade layout since they came out.

How about this one? It's 3 3/8", but this Northfield Conductor is one I have been eyballing:

I like the GEC Conductor too, with and without the coping blade. I can see GEC adding the the coping blade to the standard Conductor in addition to the pen to make a whittler pattern, similar to Queens. Speaking of Queen, these may satisfy what you're looking for... 3.5" closed and in D2. I would imagine they'd be thin and easy to pocket.

There's also the Case Mini Trapper with Damascus blades... The stag on mine isn't too thick but definitely thicker than my 2 bone mini trappers.

And if you're quick enough if they come up, a 2009 Traditional Forum Barlow. All in stag and may be thicker than you are looking for.

I got lucky and snagged this Tony Bose W/T after it had been used and sharpened regularly. In acid etched A2 steel, it is one of my favorite things. It was the user of a collection that was being sold, and somebody's Dad carried it regularly.

There’s a Queen Cutlery® Dan Burke Barlow that’s 3 ½” closed with bone scales, using D2 to make a spear point main blade and a secondary Wharncliffe. Maybe you could grind the spear point into a clip?

You can always dio it yourself.

I'm intrigued. Details?

Thanks, I've been looking around without much luck, anyone able to possibly PM me some details where I might be able to find some of these patterns? Found a few in 440 or whatever, but don't want to drop $100 for that...

Custom would be nice, but I don't think I could afford it :P

A bunch of nice patterns posted in here, unfortunately they all seem hard to find... What was the steel on the '09 BF knife, and what maker?

The '09 BF knife was a limited run made by Queen for the guys here. The blades are D2.

You need to enable email contact in your profile. PM is only available to paying members. I left you a visitor message instead with regards to the furtakers. They are about as thick as a Vic Farmer.

I know you are asking for carbon or D2
This is 420HC with a great heat treat that hold a very good edge
But his might fit what you are looking for

Hotriculture S&M 2007 series
3 5/8th"

One of those Trappers is stock, the other I reground the long spey blade into a wharncliffe. The hardest part was cutting a new nail nick (it's on the pile side of the blade and looks like crap, but it works).

I have contemplated this mod many times - your old thread makes me want to try it. And yes, the nail nick is the toughest part - can you describe how you cut it ?

If anyone else can give me some advice on cutting nail nicks I'd appreciate it - Thanks !

GEC is just starting another run of 48`s and the improved trapper sounds like something you might like...

Zombie thread, but I can't let it go without mentioning the Rough Rider Improved Muskrat: a Turkish or California clip with a long sheepsfoot at the other end. At first glance, I thought it was a Wharncliffe, but in any event it is the primary blade for me. When I first got it, it took six months to get it out of my pocket, and it is back in there now.

I just looked at a Queen hawbaker inD2. There are several places off the top of my head for NOS on these. Sometimes the second blade is a Spey, but that could be changed by a competent modder. I've even seen them on the big auction site.
Thanks, Neal
PS-zombie indeed! 2011?
