Paul, about the plastic beveler...

mmmmmm Menudo. The last I got was home made and took hours to make. Ate it with nothing extra right out of the pot So good. Never found anything else close since then. I kind of miss it but dont have the time to make it for myself, my girls give me that look if I even mention it these days. The smell of the initial cooking cured them quick. :p
Yeah man. It's like corn tortillas. Absolutely no replacement for home made. My wife is English, she doesn't know much about good food. :o

VP, I'm not sure if you are asking me or Paul, but I tried the thing out earlier. It's a mystery to me.

Um. I'm certain this isn't how you hold it, but nothing on it fits into a groove so...

oh i will take any answers i can get ;) thanks for the picture. i was just curious because i've never seen anything like it and it seemed like an interesting tool for free hand line creasing instead of the bone folder for example.

Anthony, the little beveler is shaped like a beveler tool. The most sharp area goes into the cut. I don't know if you can control it trying to bevel a GROOVE, I've never tried that. I'm pretty sure I demonstrated its use it in at least one of the DVDs. In the photo above you seem to have the side of the beveler trying to do the work and that is not a cut line that is a groove……….. and no the point of the beveler will not "fit" into the cut line. You have to kind of force it in, but go slow until you get the feel of it because it will skip out of the line.

I had the same questions after watching Mr. Longs DVD. Since I'm a tool maker, I did some research and decided to make my own. The pictures I found online weren't very helpful, so I just made one that made sense to me. It's basically like the swivel knife blade, but the angle is much less acute.

And here's a quilt pattern I did using the beveler on a cover for my Samsung tablet:

You can see one or two places where the beveler ran out of the cut...

You're correct, it's a groove, I was just trying to see if anything on the beveler could reproduce anything like you show in your video.

If you'd be willing, maybe I could send (or have one shipped to you) one of these so you could confirm that it's correct. It's really hard to take a picture of. The odd shape is like nothing I've seen on any other tool, beveler or otherwise.

Thanks for the pics! I actually did something similar, only I used a spare steel blade. It basically mimics the shape of a regular blade, only it's much more obtuse/blunt on the edge. It cannot cut, but rather, it pushes the edges of the cut into a "v" channel. Hard to describe, but I think we are on the same page.

Beautiful cover! I want to bevel my quilts like that, but I don't think this tool is right for the job. Maybe I'll modify it. If I had a lathe I would buy some delrin rod stock and see if I could make a couple of designs but I don't. Bummer.

Anthony, No need to send it. I got my first one from Tandy MANY years ago and then they just disappeared. Finally found them again, I bought 50 from Springfield Leather when I thought they were going to be discontinued and I wanted them available for people who bought the DVDs. Then SL decided to go ahead and restock them.

I assure you the one in your hand is exactly like the one I used in the DVD and that I use daily and, I use it on 100% of my quilt carvings which is a bunch……Also on the cut borders of EVERY sheath I build. It does work beautifully and saves a lot of time and I'm sure you will figure it out if you keep trying. If you can operate a swivel knife, you can make that beveler work!

I repeat!!!! go slowly until you get a good feel for it, because it will skip out of the line if you don't concentrate.

Paul

What if you took the delrin stock and made it into a pen shape?
That's a good idea. I might have some micarta or g10 laying around. That might work... Could grab some uhmw from work when I go back too.

Paul, I'll keep trying. I'm not likely to throw in the towel. ;)

Going slow is good advice. I did have it jump out of the groove a couple of times.

It appeared at 2:36 you finally inserted the tool correctly in the line. I could not get sound, so I have no idea what you were saying. Just pick up the phone and call me at the number below in my sig line and I'll walk you through it. It really is not rocket science.

I've bugged you enough. Now that you've seen the video I'm pretty sure I can get it to work. Just had that last scrap of doubt that it was the same tool, but now I feel certain that it's correct since the video shows the tool a little more clearly.
