I had Marking Methods make up some stenciles for makers that use Paul for thier HT.. The sheet I had made has Bos A2, D2, 154CM, and BG-42..
Heres an example of the A2 one http://www.survival.com/arm4.jpg
If you want to get them drop me an E-mail.. They are $15 a sheet plus shipping..
Also I will have some pictures of Paul in the shop soon to post if I can figure out how too.. I was there today, and met Mick Strider, and Chuck Buck (Both OUTSTANDING Guys), and Paul gave me the FULL $5 tour:-)Talk about a damn impressive facility...

I spoke with Trace today about using the BOS logos (great talking to you Trace). In addition to the steels he already has on file, I had them creat BOS logo stencils for ATS-34, CPM-3V, and CPM-420V...so between the two of us there should be stencils for most of the air hardening steels out there. I'm not sure if they will file the new stencils under Trace's name or mine but it should be there somewhere. The company is Electrochem Etch (not Marking Methods) and the number is 1-714-671-7744.

If anyone has any questions please feel free to contact me.

Bruce I have been sending Paul my blades for over 5 years, we have BS'd at great lenghts over the phone, but I never actually met him face to face. His shop is only about 60 miles from here, and now I am kicking myself for not having done it sooner.
If you get a chance go check it out, you will be glad you did.

Cecil, sorry for the Bum Steer on on the place for the stenciles. Hope the people at Marking Methods didnt think you were out of your mind:-)
Anyway glad to hear you got it all worked out, and it was great talking to you as well.. If you ever need anything else just let me know..

The problem I see with this is, there are some makers that "say" they use Paul Bos, but actually do their own. If they screw up or something goes wrong, then it would reflect back on Paul.

IMHO, no one with a $1,000 Paragon or other inexpensive oven can do what Paul can do with all his high tech equipment and years of experience as a FULL time heat treater. Most of the makers that do a decent job of heat treating their own blades, use Paul Bos' information to do it. He has shared that information freely.

This man has more years in heat treating than most of us have in knife making. Since everything I do is manually controlled, the one thing I can make consistent is the heat treating of my blades. I heat treat Damascus and 0-1. Every thing else I send to Paul.

Hi AT,
I agree...the potential for abuse does exist. Actually Paul himself suggested that the stencils be made availble but I'm not sure if he considered the possibility of counterfeiting or not.

I would suggest the he dispense them to guys who he knows uses his heat treat but he likely doesn't have time to fool with it. I suppose if anyone wanted them bad enough they could have them developed on their own but having them "ready made" would make it easier to do the wrong thing.

I know one thing, Pauls work has gotten such recognition that his name is synonymous with quality heat treat in the customers mind. Lately I've had several customers ask why I don't have the official "BOS" logo on my knives if I'm really using BOS heat treat...almost like the logo is the "Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval". As you point out, the logo itself doesn't necessarily promise performance.

Suggestions anyone?

Take care,
Cecil

For one, the beauty of "the knife club" is that sooner or later the unscrupulous guys are ferreted out. It doesn't take long for word to get around in the community; makers, dealers, and collectors alike. Everyone soon knows through the grapevine if this guy or that guy will screw you over or not. The same with the logos, however, I must agree, the opportunity does exist. There is always the instance of a guys or two...

I agree with you 100%, I was hoping people would contact me directly. I could then contact Paul and make sure the maker in question actually used his service.. We sure as hell dont want any Yahoo's claiming Paul did the HT on BS blades..
I guess we will have to figure out something here...

Only solution I can think of and it may not be doable, is to have the blades that BOS HT's etched by BOS before they are sent back to the maker. Otherwise, anyone can use the stencils...heck, they could make their own now and try to pass it off as BOS HT.
