Think of it this way.
A standard blade open knife works by the blade being moved out from the handle.
The Paul handle open knife works by moving the handle off the blade.

In practice you hold the pivot with the handle pointing neutral or up, then you depress the lock and the handle swings down off the blade. The knife is then open and locked in your hand without you taking your hand off any part of it or the lock.
