Paw Paw's Knife

Wow - an actual honest-to-goodness Searles bowie! There's something you don't see everyday. Thanks for sharing this special knife with us!

From the book. (Damn, even this BOOK is valued at $500 and more!)

That gold 'cartouche' embem is reflected in the mirror.

Tell us more.... :)

Hi Coop and All,

Here is a thought.

The knife is put up at this time but Paw Paw Henderson is hanging on the wall at home. I'll try and get some decent pictures with the gold 'cartouche' and Paw Paw Henderson in the shot.

Wow, the book is valued at $500, cool.

Come to 'Paw-Paw'...! :D

Excellent history visit. Show us more.

The book is a rare limited edition. At the time of printing in 1990 it was told to be only 1100 copies at $150.00 even then. I rarely see them available and never saw it go for less than $400 in the last few years. I got a signed leather bound copy from Bruce Voyles' wife a few years back.

What a treat to see this knife here. It certainly is a piece of Bowie history.

Thank you for posting a pic of this knife. It is great to know it is in good hands and cherished!

Very very interesting and thanks for posting the pictures!!!! Do you know why the knife was presented?

Triton just called this thread to my attention. This is a gorgeous knife and I am so very envious of you, Warru, for having it. ;) Joking aside, that is just one beautiful example of Searles' work. Thank you so very much for sharing it with us.

I bought the very nice reproduction of the Fowler Searles knife that Dixie Gun Works sold a few years back, but never got around to buying the appropriate scabbard for it that they sold separately and now they no longer sell either one.

For all of the bogus knives that appear relentlessly on the internet, every once in a whole a gem surfaces. Of course we already knew about this knife from the book, but it sure is nice to see it again.

I believe that there are presently 5 known, authentic Searles knives -- only one of which is in collector hands. I first got to handle that knife (owned by Logan Sewell) a few years ago when we inducted Daniel Searles into the ABS Hall of Fame, and it was quite an experience for this long time bowie lover. Of the top early bowie makers, Searles, Schively, and Bell are the VERY top - and of those, a Searles is the hardest to get. Warru, you've got one of the finest known bowies there, and definitely worth into 6 figures.

Thanks so much for sharing... any chance you could post or email more photos? I've had trouble coming up with good Searles photos for my occasional presentations on bowies, and everybody likes to look at Searles knives!

Hi Triton,

I'm not sure why the knife was presented to him but I'll look into it for you.

That would be outstanding! If you can discover the story you ought to type it up and put it with the knife. Provenance is everything!!! Well okay not everything in this case but it sure helps. :)

Hi All,

In the 1990 sept/oct edition of 'Blade Magazine' there is a nice write up about the knife and my great grandmother was interviewed as saying Alexander Dimitry, educator and one time Counsel or Ambassador had presented the knife to her great grandfather Stephen Henderson jr.

Here are a few more images as promised.

What a handsome young boy with two of his favorite things: Daddy's prized knife and Mommy's chocolate chip cookie. he he he!

Love these shots. Thanks!

I have to say thank you for taking the time to share this with us again.

Just a fantastic "gift" to all knife-nuts.

Wow. Simply breathtaking. Growing up in Baton Rouge, I well remember when William R. Williamson was involved in getting a historical marker erected on the site of Daniel Searles blacksmith shop. I always take my 'knife friends' to the spot for a picture in front of the marker. The plot of land is directly in front of the Old State Capital building and it is, nowadays, a big public plaza. The marker stands in a little greenspace adjacent to a city bus stop...very surreal to have knife guys trekking out to look at a bus stop. :D

Great knife, great story. If you're ever looking for someone to play with you(re knife) I will gladly take on that daunting task:D :D
