found this at a pawn shop today
only name on it is PLUMB I think, its pretty rusty
as you can see its swimming in vinegar rite now
Any suggestions on what it was, and how to make it a nice axe again?
this will be my first attempt at resurrecting a old one.

I cant go wrong, I paid more for the gallon of white vinegar than the axe head.
all told I'm in under 5 bucks rite now.
suggestions on the handle would be really great, as I said
this will be my first attempt to save a old work horse

Yes, if it's not a mistake, I do believe the Plumb, Dayton pattern was made to the exact specifications that would allow it to fit precisely into Chinese food take-a-way tubs.

nope lol not take away
sliced lunch meat container from the grocer
didnt want to ruin one of the
wife's nice containers with one of my "projects"
so this way if I toss it when I'm done no loss
and I keep my hide intact
It does indeed say PLUMB in distinct block print
now that its had a few minutes in the liquid to clear up a bit

Plus a spring roll or two. An axe and a snack, can life get any better?!

I'm gonna assume
the last few comments were for somebody else
no clue how to tell what this thing weighs
no real way to scale it here suppose I could guess

I have to say, I did some reading here over the last week or so
when I saw this old axe, I figured what the hell
in less than 30 min in vinegar I'm already seeing a lot of paint coming back up
out of the rust patina, even appears that there maybe some kind of number under the plumb imprint
its kind of in a rectangle and maybe a size below, have to wait for the rust to clear a bit
always liked axes, just never gave them much thought before

If it fits into one of those deli boxes it almost has to be a hatchet, doesn't it? Maybe a boys axe?

its not the small deli box its the big ONE pound container lol
wonder if there is a conversion chart from one pound of sliced turkey to one axe head
anyway, either way I'm good its destined for inside my truck tool box lid
going to mount it so that its attached inside the lid when you open it
nice an handy

ok here goes
apologize in advance if the pics are on the "big" side no clue how to resize on imgur
so here goes tape in pic to give sizes
if I had to guess from feel, its around 4lb(ish) but again its a guess

The impressive part is that the head was never used as a hammer or sledge. The majority of previously-enjoyed axes have been improperly used to pound spikes/brake drums etc. An axe file will sharpen up your blade no problem and there is lots of blade metal left for you to work with.
Nice find. There is a rule of thumb formula for determining handle length but only use and experience will tell you what your own preferences are. Getting decent handles these days is difficult with the major manufacturers having down-sized to 3/4 inch stock thickness rather than the traditional 1 inch of years past.
