Okay, you knife enthusiasts will not like this. I myself own and have owned from Al Mar to Benchmade and Spyderco knives. I know what a quality knife is, and yet when I stopped into this pawn shop today, I was taken by this little fixed blade.

Blade length is 3-3/4", steel is some unknown stainless.

But I loved the size, balance, shape, and even the flat grind of the blade.

And it was sharp. Razor sharp.

To me, this is practically the perfect fixed-blade EDC.

Does anyone have an idea who makes this? I would guess China, but I really like it.

Price: $7.50 plus tax

"Does anyone have an idea who makes this?" Hmmm, could be Winchester... ;)

Good find. A friend here at BFC once found an early Bob Loveless 'Delaware Maid' hunter in a pawn shop for $30...then again, I don't think that one was made in China...

This is not a joke. Winchester is not a knife manufacturer. They contract these out.

Technically, the Winchester knives are made by Carolina Knife and Tool. CKT is a Fiskars/Gerber offshoot company that's geared to international sales and mass produced, cheap knives and multi-tools. All I've ever handled of the CKT products are the Winchester knives, and for cheap China junk they feel pretty good in hand.

I just can't bring myself to buy anything labelled as using "surgical stainless steel" though.

It's not labeled anything - no China, no "Surgical Stainless Steel"

Last I knew all the CKT knives, and thus all the Winchester knives, were said to be "surgical stainless" steel. I know all the ones I've seen at work have been marked as such on the boxes.

It may not be a quality steel, but for a $8 beater carry knife it'll do.

They had those in a three piece set at WalMart last year. After Christmas they went on clearance for five bucks.

I have no doubt. The point is I like the design for a cheapie. If it had been made with V10 stainless and G10 scales by Seki City, Japan I would have liked it even more, but it also would have cost about $100 more.

For what the winchester's cost, they're not bad knives. They're not good either, but they're at least half decent.

Bingo. As long as you know you get what you pay for, the Winchester knives are pretty good value for the money. It's just a weird personal thing that keeps me from buying one.

I've gotten quite a few of the Winchester sets as gifts over the past couple of years, and have been surprised by them. Meaning for a beater knife or an extra in your pack they are pretty good.
