Pawn Stars

I know it's a real store, there's no debating that. I'm just saying that the show is beefed up with "drama" like the other shows on the network, such as operation repo. Perhaps some of the stuff has happened at that store over it's entire history and has just been added to the filming along with the "natural encounters". So I'll give you that. Although perhaps not entirely scripted, the show is still some sort of quasi-reality documentary. :)

I think that's the problem with all of todays "reality" shows... they are all beefed up in one way or another to maximize their entertainment value.

Participants are "mike'd up", moved into best camera positions, asked to "try that line/answer/question again" repeatedly, have to wait for lighting, sound, and producers directions and guidance... very few if any, are actually "real". It's amazing what is going on around all of these "real" people as they are being filmed being "real".:D

"Cops" is about as close to real as any I have ever seen, and even parts of it are done repeatedly until the directors/producers get what they want. TV has done a pretty fine job redefining what the word "reality" means.:D

Another show I've been enjoying lately is called "Auction Kings" on the Discovery channel... kind of interesting.

That's for sure!
Seems to have various meanings now...or maybe it's multi-leveled now? Maybe we need classes...like Reality-1, Reality-2.

Defining what's real and not real does gets tricky.
Take pro wrestling. It's scripted (sorry if you're still a believer) but those guys ARE really throwing their bodies off the top rope and landing on the canvas (or someone else). Is it real or fake? Or does it matter...its entertainment and many love it.

Pawn Stars is well done. Entertaining and infomative. Pretty much all I expect from a show these days.

My favorite of this type of shows is Oddities. I make a good part of my living
selling fossils and have collected skulls since I was a kid. There are some creepy folks in NYC but I share their interest in the unusual and odd.
We have only recently hooked up cable and was pleasantly surprised to find shows worth watching.

I like Pawn Stars too. It seems like a lot of shows now a days are going for that whole "antique, auction, selling" kind of thing. I also like American pickers but it can get boring after a while.

Wow! This thread really took off. I guess I'm not the only one intrigued by that show.

They get nice stuff in but after watching what I downloaded the have no freaking clue what they're talking about...especially when it comes to antique weapons.

I'm hooked. Been watching it since it first came on. Really starting to like Storage Wars too.

Ditto. Storage Wars is pretty good too... not nearly as good as Pawn Stars though.

Anyone watch American Pickers? I like that show as well. It can be kinda boring at times though. Sometimes it can seem like they're just sifting through trash.
One man's trash is another's treasure though, the saying goes.

I used to watch Operation Repo.... then I looked it up to see what the business was really called. I then found out it is COMPLETELY scripted and utterly fabricated. It has a director/writer/etc. just like a movie or fictional TV show. Was really disappointed.

its all a "show" for the show, "Chumlee" isnt as dumb as he looks when they show him starring into space with his mouth open, the stuff that goes on the show is "staged" as in, you call them up and say what you got and your in the area, if they like it theyll fill you in on what they want you to do. The guy that brought in that old Bell, the "expert" that he brought in was the guy who owned that very bell at one time.

infact i forgot all about this... Think you got what it takes to be on pawn stars? :p

yeah, operation repo is a joke, thought it was fake when the guy pulled a gun on the first season, supposeably shooting the car, but all they could find was some hammer like dents

I hope so. No one can be that stupid and still their brain create enough signals for locomotion.

Finished downloading season 1 of Pawn Stars and can't believe how stupid some of the people are, the guy with the John Hancock framed double signiture that he inherited just trying to get rid of it proves people are losing respect for their past and nations history!

Something like that belongs displayed in a museum or national library.

A family friend was on one of the auction shows. He said his piece did not sell, he told them he was a small dealer during one of the taped segments, and they had to re shoot that, they told him he was not a dealer but a collector. He said they shot numerous takes, of which he was on screen for about a couple minutes tops. He also said that they set him up in a hotel, and he ate on their tab.

Anybody found anything good in a pawn shop? I've seen a few good rifles, at okay prices. Passed on a whole box of good Gerber/Leatherman/Victorinox multi tools that needed a little TLC. Wish I would have picked those up. Most of the pawn shops I've been in have been GUN and pawn. I've sold some cutlery and DVD's to them, for almost pennies on the dollar. Gotten great deals from them at gun shows.

BTW, here's a link for the series. Pawn Stars

I bought a box full of old wedding bands that I bought to smelt down for about $5 a ring, 10k gold and I got about 25 rings...best way to get gold for home casting IMO.

Once I'm back stateside I'll probably do the pawn shops for some guns...question since you sound like you've done it, do the pawn shops have a FFL license to sell legally? or do the guns get sold as private transactions not requiring a FFL? I'm still learning how the US system works in respect to firearms.

I like the tattooed chick on American Pickers.
+ 1 :thumbup. Danielle is kind of cool. I personally prefer AP to Pawnstars. IMHO the Pawnstars guy do nothing but lowball everybody. The Pickers guys actually went back and gave a man 5 grand in a recent episode after selling a couple of carnival posters for much more than they expected. They seem like very cool guys. I guess the lowball offers is just the nature of the pawn business.
