How often do ya take a moment to check out what ya dog has found ? Often it's nothing more than the scent left by another dog or passing squirrel but sometimes it can some pretty interesting stuff !

Take my walk the other day, these are three things I found interesting that Snicker sniffed/spotted !

First off she somehow spotted this Robin on her nest:

Snicker jumping up at the tree caused the mum to take flight giving me chance to take a quick pic of the nest:

Second stop was when she sniffed out this shrews head, not sure why only the body had been eaten. I do know that shrews have scent glands that put prey off eating them but as far as I know they are located on the body ?

Finally Snicker stopped to sniff in some long grass and upon investigation I found this bird pellet. Probably from an owl or eagle, both of which are in the area and both of which eat smaller birds etc. You can clearly see the dead birds leg !

Next time ya dog stops make sure to check out what they have found !

Great pics and good advice. My dog is a Dachshund and is constantly on the hunt. We have to really watch what she is sticking her nose in. She loves to snack on things she finds:barf: and she is absolutely fearless so we have to make sure she isn't going after something that might harm her.

BTW, you're getting close to 8,000 posts.

Love the colour of those robins eggs. Pretty gross stuff otherwise. My dog has found some pretty gross stuff, dead frogs, snakes etc. She has a real nose for dead fish during salmon season though, and she loves to roll in it:barf:. She managed to catch a skunk one time in our backyard too. Took weeks to get the smell out:rolleyes:

Most of the time all my dog sniffs out is cat poop...which he promptly eats! (much to my dismay)

every time my dog finds a carcass he rolls in it for what ever reason, so when I see him do it I go check it out. seen some neat stuff cuz of him, good tip!

When you have the snakes that we do, you very quickly learn to pay attention to what your dog has noticed :D

Snakes aside, it pays to keep an eye on what fox terriers take an interest in

It can save you from taking home a dog that has rolled in the foulest smelling substances they have managed to find :D :D

Kind regards :D

I have found that nothing "Moves, crawls ,flys,or stinks " That my dog doesnt find. Last week picking huckleberrys she came back to me with a womens G-String. Scared the heck out of me cause I first thought it was a snake. I have to be carefull when I let her come in the house to make sure she doesnt have some disgusting thing in her mouth.

Great post Pit! Twice my dog has alerted me to snakes just off to the side of the trail…neither were poisonous, but he makes a great early warning system! He’s also found a few decent sized turtles.

I never grew up doing any serious hiking without a dog and I can’t believe it’s taken this long to ever figure out how much of an advantage they are beyond the companionship. I’ve been in several camp grounds where the night-time critters (armadillos, raccoons, possums and small black bears) will root around your camp. Despite all the precautionary measure, you kids most likely dropped part of their dinner or didn’t clean their bowls good enough and there’s nothing like a family of raccoons trashing your camp kitchen! Our old pooch (rest his soul) and our new pup have been awesome in the outdoors. They probably don’t have the attention to detail that Snicker has, but they do turn up some amazing items that often get overlooked by us two-legged critters.

What is it with dogs rolling on dead things? My dog rubs her head on anything dead that she finds.

Dogs on the trail are one of man's earliest assets,

...and as such, where one of the first domesticated animals.

Hiking with my two dogs, they keep me hyper aware of what's going on in the woods.

Aiko is my long ranges eyes and ears, always scaning deep into the woods,

...Jake tends to work close in, always using his nose to follow every scent trail, also acutely aware of movement in the canopy above.

Hiking with dogs is the best.

My dog DEFINITELY would have ate that...who knows how many pairs of underwear of my mother and sister he has destroyed/eaten (and later thrown up most of the time)

I was told that dogs do that because that in the wild they would roll in stuff and go back to the pack "scented up" to alert their homies that they found food.(carrion)(sp?) BD

Thought about having one of those one day.Any truth to the rumor they are hyper? I don't own a dog right now,I prefer doberman's though.:)

They are hyper but they are also super intelligent and amazingly alert to stuff when out in the woods and on the trails. I would only recommend them to someone who likes spending a lot of times outdoors where they can run their abundant energy off !
