I started a thread in Shoptalk back in March of this year, and a link to it can be found here;http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/835941-First-Annual-Pay-It-Forward-Buildoff

The idea started from my interest in designing knives. I have all these designs in my head and on paper that I would love to see turn into a real, actual knives, but lack the funds to have them made, and the set up and time to make them myself. So, I cast around for ideas about how to have some designs made, not because I want to own them myself, but really just to see how well what I put on paper would translate into steel.

A concept for some kind of contest was born. To help motivate involvement, it was suggested that the target for this contest be charitable. That jives with me, however, I did not want to dictate which charity, nor coordinate payment to a charity. So, we left that alone and said "just make a knife, and either sell it or give it away, the only thing I want to see is that someone benefits from your effort". In short, make a knife, and Pay it Forward.

I supplied three designs, and each knife maker could pick one. I mailed a copy of each maker's chosen design to him, and it was made clear from the outset that the makers had complete freedom to either stick with the design as is, or interpret it in whatever way they so chose. Again, this build off was not about dictating rules or anything like that, it was about Paying it Forward. My designs were my contribution, and it so happens that at least one maker has made multiple versions of one my designs, which has certainly helped him with sales, and that is an outcome which I am very pleased occurred. It's my hope that all participants treat the design I sent them as their own, and feel free to reuse it any time.

Here are the three designs for the first annual, 2011 Pay it Forward Build Off;

Over the course of this month, I will be posting photos of each knife maker's version of their chosen design. There were about 14 participants, and there is an interesting and fresh diversity of knives which all share a common root, but all of which necessarily diverged and grew through the efforts of those artisans who stepped up to the plate in order to Pay it Forward.

I'd like to start this thread with a huge Thank You to all the maker's who took part in the very first of what I hope will become an annual Bladeforums event. This is a giving bunch of guys, many of whom helped each other out during this process, and displayed the sense of brotherhood and sharing which makes the custom knife world such an awesome one.

Great idea. Lorien. I'm really anxious to see some of the results, particularly of that "A" design.

Paul

I like the "A" also. Handle cant/contours remind me of Knight and Wheeler with Siska/Broadwell overtones in the blade profile. :thumbup:

Best of luck with your project,
Will

Lorien did a great job, and exhibited a lot of patience putting this together. I really enjoyed taking part in this build. This was the first knife i truly enjoyed making from start to finish. As a newbie maker, it presented a host of challenges for me. I really enjoyed trying a few new tricks, and as Lorien said, there was a TON of maker camaraderie happening. It made me feel better as a new maker being in a build with some really amazing makers, as i learned many new tricks. I sold my knife here on the forums and Payed it Forward to a local guy who wants to get into sheath making, and really hope this helps him get a jump start.
Lastly, Lorien deserves a huge THANK YOU for organizing a great build. I also would like to extend thanks to the other makers for all the help and advice.

Great job to ALL involved.

Mike

Mike, thank you for the kind words!

Well, since you went first, Mike, your knife gets fresh pow.
This is such an impressive knife, you have mad skills and an innate talent Mr. Davis.
Keep having fun making knives, it really shows in this outstanding effort. It really matters!

I guess I will go next! This Pay It Forward idea of Lorien's really opened up my vision and actually broke down some unseen walls in my way. I found myself designing knives that I knew I could make, instead of designing knives the way they should look and function. I chose design "A" completely terrified of that sweeping plunge. I reached out to Matt Bailey for advice and some direction on how to approach the grind. after MANY botched grinds (On mild steel) I bit the bullet and succeeded in completing the knife. Since then I have made at least 12 of this design, and even created some new designs based on the sweeping plunge. I stepped outside my box, got some help from a few BF knifemakers but most importantly made some amazing friends that I may have never met if this PIF had not happened.

My Charity was the local Boy Scout Troop #119, they needed some "Community" gear which included a 4 man tent, sleeping bag, sleeping Pad and misc. items. I was lucky enough to join the Troop in their 50 mile hike in the High Unita mountains last month, I saw the gear being put to use by a scout that wouldn't have gone otherwise.

Lorien, Thank you for doing this and allowing me to use your design now and in the future. I am looking forward to the next one.

thank you, Ryan!

Here is Ryan's PiF knife;

There is a reason why the photo of Mike's knife and the photo of Ryan's knife looks similar, and that is because Ryan took both pictures. Mike was having some issues getting his knife moving, Ryan offered to take some pics and voila! Knife sold right away!

Good pictures are fundamental to internet purchasing. And Ryan is a hell of a photographer! I encourage those of you who appreciate photography to check out his website. There is some neat stuff in there, (David Darom, take note- you two share some things in common...).

I love what you did with that design Ryan. I can't believe you sold a dozen! That's awesome. I think we make a good team, I'm greatly looking forward to working with you in the future:D:thumbup:.

Yes, Ryan i apologize. Ryan was kind enough to offer to take photo's of my knife for free. He was crucial in me selling my knife, and i owe him a HUGE thanks as well. Ryan is one hell of a nice guy, i have since bought one of his knives, and would recommend his stuff to absolutely anyone.

Thanks
Mike

It's great to see these designes come to life. Good job everyone.

Roger

Both knives look very nice. Due to materials used I like mr. Davis's knife more than mr. Ryans knife, but both look very nice!

Great pics!

kind regards,

Jos

Thanks for the compliments. I appreciate any feedback, positive or negative, as it will help me grow as a maker. I think everyone involved(What i have seen so far) has done an absolutely amazing job! I want to see more finished knives in this thread! Come on guys!!!

now, all these designs were based around the idea of no pivots. I totally did not expect to see what you are about to see.

What follows, is Erin Burke's insane genius;

Knife19a.jpg
Knife19b.jpg
Knife19c.jpg
Knife19d.jpg
Knife19e.jpg
Knife19f.jpg
Knife19g.jpg

these are the stats;

Open Length: 7-15/16"
Closed Length: 5-3/8"
Blade Length: 3-1/4" Tip to choil (flat-ground differentially heat-treated)
Steel: W2 from Don Hanson III
Handles: 6AL-4V Titanium w/ stainless hardware/latch
Inlay: Desert Ironwood
Pivots: 3/16" pivots w/ 1/4" bushings and PB washers

I don't really have the time to cut and past all Erin's captions, but they are certainly worth a good read. Check them out here, post #270; http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...Pay-It-Forward-Buildoff?p=9744404#post9744404

Up til this point, these are all the pictures I've received. There are still a good number of guys out there who've committed to seeing this project through, and they all have til the end of the month. Come October 1, I'll add a poll and just for fun, you guys can vote for your favourite knife.

Nice stuff everyone and good on you Lorien for such a creative idea!!

That Bali by Erin makes me very sad that they are illegal in Canada. It's gorgeous and innovative. That hamon is so subtle but clear..

Truly amazing project, Lorien!

From the pieces inspired by you that have already been finished
it seems like this is going to be one hell of a series of knives!!

By the way, such a series, starting with the original design sketches
and then a display of 10-12 chosen resulting knives is well worth
a special section in my next book... How about it, Lorien?

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

Talented work. Inspiring premise. Even superb photography.

I'm watching!
