j...on the way

coaldigger...bad news...USPS says no can do on the tram...cannot ship swords or machetes...

Who can?

Big wrongo on that one. I ship big knives that size all the time. One rule of dealing with the Post Office is never tell them what your shipping.

AFAIK there is no law or regulation that says you can't ship swords....this is just the postal employee making stuff up.

A machete is a "garden tool".

From the postal code:

44 Knives and Sharp Instruments
441 Definitions
441.1 General

Sharp instruments include all sharp-pointed or sharp-edged implements such as knives, tools, ice picks, razor blades, stilettos, or similar devices. When uncertain about the mailability of a sharp instrument or a switchblade knife, a ruling may be requested from the local postmaster (see 215.3).

441.2 Switchblade Knife
A switchblade knife has a blade that opens automatically by hand pressure applied to a button or other device in the handle, or by operation of inertia, gravity, or both.
442 Mailability

A switchblade knife, as defined in 441.2, is mailable only to the following categories of addressees:

a. Certain designated supply or procurement officers and employees ordering, procuring, or purchasing them for use in connection with their respective governments or organizations, such as:

(1) Civilian or armed forces supply or procurement officers, and employees of the federal government.

(2) Supply or procurement officers of the National Guard, the Air National Guard, or the militia of a state, territory, or the District of Columbia.

(3) Supply or procurement officers or employees of the municipal government of the District of Columbia, or of the government of any state or territory, or of any county, city, or other political subdivision of a state or territory.

b. Manufacturers or bona fide dealers of such knives in connection with a shipment made to an address in one of the above categories.

443 Packaging and Marking
443.1 General

All sharp-pointed or sharp-edged instruments such as knives, tools, ice picks, razor blades, etc., must be securely packaged in a strong container as required in DMM 601.1-601.8. Sufficient cushioning material must be used to protect the sharp points and edges from cutting through the outer packaging during normal Postal Service handling.

443.2 Marking

No marking of any kind that indicates the nature of the contents may be placed on the outside of any mailpiece containing a switchblade knife.

I know it is kind of off the knife/wilderness survival skills theme, but I have some odd SCUBA gear that I could would be willing to pay forward.

For example:

Knife leg straps
sink the stink (small packets of wetsuit conditioner)
a couple of fin straps
a mask strap or two

E-mail me if you are a diver and you need something odd (looks like I don't have pm rights as a registered user). Who know diving could be a survival skill at some time.

email is: diverdn (at) gmail (dot) com

I still have this stuff up. I went through my stuff and found that I have a couple of leg straps for underwater knives, and I have some lenses that you put in your mask so that you can see up close. If you have old eyes like me.

myal I was just wondering what the diameter of the firesteels are? I am going to order a bravo-1 sheath and don't know whether to also buy a firesteel that fits in the loop or not.:o

Save the hijacks for a PM...

Sorry...I just went back to re-post something that has now slipped my tired mind and realized that came off as a bit of an a-hole. Been up for 3 days now. I just meant maybe shoot it private because it was not really relevant to much of the course of the thread.

Like I said...after 72 hours of being awake/working.dealing with idiot drunks/dealing with stupid people and their questions(anyone know of somebody hiring in the Austin area?), I didn't see it...sorry...
