Hey all, can't afford both, but gotta have one. If you could pick one of these knives for a combat survival blade to get strapped to an Eberlestock V69 in Ranger Green, which one would it be and why? The 5.5 inch 3/16ths blade or the 7 3/8ths 1/4th blade?

For combat survival go with the 711. I have the 511 it has a small handle the 711 is supposed to have a larger handle and at .25 SR101 will be much more indestructible. For a hunting knife the 511 is more practical but the 711 can be your knife, chopper, prybar, hammer all in one.

I'd get one but I have 2 of the scrapyard MO Regulators which have almost the same blade length.

to be honest the saber convex 1/4th kind of scares me... 3/16ths is more than indestructable enough in my opinion, though I do like the 1 3/4ths blade width on the 711, I have a thing for fat blades. maybe I'll dig up some specs and compare it measurement by measurement with the Kabar fighting knife and see just how big this 711 is. If it were in 3/16ths my problem would be solved.

I felt the same way about the M6. I would still have that blade if it were 3/16" which would make it lighter and more manageable. As for the grind I found that the 1/4" saber grind works well on wood but really sucked at anything beyond that for say food prep or anything where the blade has to pass all or most of the way through the material. It can be done but it's not fun. That's why most use the large knives as hatchets and have a small knife for the other stuff.

PayetteRucker, I can not give you any advise on what knife, but depending on how the 1/4" ground. 1/4" thick stock can be a great slicer. I know because I reground the swamprat I think was the dogfather or I can not remember the name of it now, but anyways. now that sucker slices like a knife should.
If you go to the thread dedicated chopper by preacher man. Look on page 3 or 4 Preacher man posted the video that I sent to him of a knife slicing paper and leather. My 1/4" swamprat knife slices just like that knife that preacher man is getting. It did not before I reground it though. When I got the knife serval years back the edge was ok but nothing like it has now.

Yeah most 1/4 inchers I have I reprofiled and they do alright, but all are flat ground from the saber bevel, and this is convex. Seems a little overdone for something other than a combat gut spiller. The Rodent 9 is coming out now and that's all but made my decision-I'll get the 511, and when money permits a Rucki and Rodent 9- that is unless DRodent thinks the handle is TOO small. I don't need any breathing room on a handle as long as it fits like a glove, An in-hand shot would be real helpful if there are any available on the 511. Oh Common now Santy-Claus, I'd love a big chopper to pair with this guy! If they go out of style before I can acquire one I guess there's always the Kabar Grass Machete.

Payette have a custom one made instead worring about it going out of style. That is what custom is all about. Getting it your way;).

Lots of beautiful custom opportunities out there, but many come with either too high a price or a considerable wait time, if not both. I'm more than happy to support an artist over a machining tool if I can afford it. There are a few in particular that have caught my eye, Paul Moore being one of them.

I vote a 711. For one reason (this is personal). I have big hands. The tiny handle is the only reason I did not order one was the fact that it had the smaller handle.

I wanted one for the smaller size and thinner blade were selling points for me.
