Paying for catalogs

Interesting thread. It’s true, the cost of making a yearly four-color consumer catalog is enormous but IMHO very worthwhile. Getting ours together here at Spyderco involves: a professional photoshoot, copywriter, graphic layout/design, press checks (that run consecutively 24-48 hours), the cost of printing (always 6 figures minimum), and labor costs. All of this takes 6-9 months and 2 employees devoted to it nearly fulltime. Companies requesting payment for catalogs are simply recouping their costs. To each their own. We consider it a pretty minimal price to pay to provide a useful service to someone who is interested in what we make.

Just my personal opinion, but I like having a tangible paper catalog in my hands. I like being able to read it anywhere I go and I have it ready to roll up if I need to shake it at the dog. Somehow it’s just not the same printing it off a website even if it’s in color.
