I sold an Endura on eBay, and specifically stated that I will only take money orders for payment. I do have a Paypal account, but I don't use it. Mainly because of the sellers fees. Last night I received an email that the high bidder just noticed that I don't accept Paypal, and wants me to pass on the knife to the next highest bidder. Well, I don't know if the next bidder will pay, and I don't know if the high bidder just doesn't want to pay for the knife. I gave the guy the benefit of the doubt, and emailed him that I would accept payment through Paypal, if he added on ten percent for the Paypal fees. This morning, I got an email from someone who appears to be a family member of this buyer, stating that the buyer did not have to pay an extra fee. I did not clarify this in the auction, but I didn't say that I would accept Paypal as payment. I just emailed the person back stating that I would accept Paypal this once, and I would eat the fees, but that the person should fire off a payment to me ASAP, and that it was not my fault that they did not read the auction. What more could I do, preach about how this was poor practice on their part?

I've been in the same boat as this guy, but I didn't act like I was being railroaded by the buyer. I believe that the ten percent fee for Paypal is more than customary on eBay and other marketplaces.

I guess I just have to put a statement in my auctions about Paypal.

You should have stuck to your auction terms and accepted only the money order.

There's been quite a bit of controversy on this forum about the practice of passing PayPal's 3% charge on to the buyer, but this is the first time I've heard of anyone trying to jack it up to 10% -- or could that be a typo?

Yeah, 10% is way too high, the actual PayPal fees are either 3%, or 4% if you get paid by someone out of the US, I can understand the buyer being a little insulted by asking him for a 10% fee, but of course you are entitled to insist on a money order, and if you really do want a 10% fee, well, I suppose you can ask for it. Did you think that PayPal actually charges the seller 10%?

I thought that it was 10%. If not, then Paypal has overcharged me. Many times. My practice is only taking money orders, I haven't used Paypal since April.

It's technically against PayPal/Ebay's rules to charge people extra for using PayPal. If you get caught doing it in an auction, they may just pull that auction or suspend your account. It's commonly practiced elsewhere though.

IMO, the buyer was out of line because they should've read the auction before bidding. It's their responsibility. I agree with Danbo. You shouldn't have to accept a payment method you don't want to and you shouldn't have to take the hit from selling to a lower bidder. If they refused to pay, you file an unpaid item dispute.

Why bother with all the trouble, When the buyer said he didn't want to abide by the auction terms just file a non paying bidder complaint with ebay and relist the item. You are doing everyone including yourself a favor by helping to weed out deadbeats. There are so many problems with ebay because sellers are afraid to make waves and hurt the feelings of some loser looking to get something for nothing.

Well said !

I've sold quite a few items on Ebay and haver had very few problems. One thing you can't do is offer a discount if the person pays by a means other than PP. Got a reprimand for that one!

The buyer in your case just didn't read the fine print, I've had that issue with buyers, too.

I really hate to take PP but if you don't you eliminate a good portion of the buyers. I try to price my items to include PP fees, I consider the Ebay fees to be advertising.

I'm upset by some buyers shipping terms. Nothing like a DVD for $2.99 and $8.95 shipping! All you can do is contact the seller before bidding and try to
make a deal.

SHS, you wanted to sell the item, I would have done the same thing.

Win

Give them an UPFRONT contract in your auction.....that way they know the rules....YOUR rules, if they are going to play. Nothing pisses me off more than a guy/gal to win a bid then get "buyers remorse".....this is BS! You can pick 'em out a mile away........if its not money orders- its PayPal fees! BS!

TELL them in your auction......MONEY ORDER ONLY or PayPal with a 3% fee- thats fair! Upfront contract works well...and I have never had a complaint!

Sorry to hear you were bam-boozled! I have had it happen to me---many times---til I finally got tired of it and LAID some laws down in my auctions......Just like TV or the radio...they can go on to the next one on down if they don't like this song! Good luck! PS: NEGITIVE feedback works well......also! Sorry-----I've just about had it with folks that PLAY games on e-bay!

I do not ever ask for the extra 3% because I am getting insant payment and do not have to worry about waiting for a MO to arrive.I can get payment right then and ship the iten right out.I figure that is worth the 3% charge.
