hey guys, got a question for you, how long is it appropriate to wait with no response before you freak out and cancel a payment?

here's the back ground, leaving names out of it until issue is completely resolved.
him
long time gold member (2004) has 16 positive feedbacks with no negs...

me
newbie that doesn't know his head from, and just trying to figure things out, 0 feedback

i made a post in response to his ad...
2~3 days go by
i get a response on the morning of day 3 , SPF to jason, (what does SPF actually mean?)
i missed email that day respond in the AM with payment sent, addy and a email request saying he's got it and aware of it.
the next day, i drop him an email in the morning and bump the thread x2 in the pm just to be sure i did things right
today, i'm posting this thread and wondering what i should do, as i have still yet to hear a word....

i don't want to be a bad buyer and want to give the guy a chance to let me know what's going on, and wasn't really planning on doing anything till tonight with it anyways, i've noticed from other sales happening on here people tend to be pretty quick and seller was much quicker with other sells, i'm wondering if the fact that he took 3 days to respond to my initial request is an indicator of anything.......like going on in his life or what have you...he has been less active lately......

basically how long would you guys wait with out hearing anything back before you retract your payment? i don't want the guy to think he got burned or anything or i'm a scammer in any way, i'm new here and want to keep buying things off of people so am in a pretty tough spot of what to do here...with no response from the guy it makes it hard to know what to do, or whats going on with him, if things are tough for him right now, fair enough i don't mind waiting, it's shorter than the lead time from the manufacture and i save $30 bucks, but if i'm getting burned here that would suck because i should have just spent the extra $30 and supported a local business to me......

anyways, am i freaking out prematurely here? what do you guys think, how would you handle this?

SPF means Sold Pending Funds. Don't freakout. Give it some time, real life happens and things can get sideways. You should have 45 days to file a dispute through paypal. Keep in mind, you need to read through the paypal or whatever service their guidelines for accurate information.

SPF = sold pending funds

The rest I dunno man. I scanned your text, and it sounds like if you made a paypal payment, he needs to contact you NOW. If you are wondering if you "won" the item and should make payment it sounds like the seller has moved on and so should you... Sorry I can't help more, but I'm out the door and just wanted to throw this out there... gl! GL = good luck :P

just to be clear paypal says he has my money....or he has my sheath depending on how you look at it at this point, haha

cool, thanks man, yeah i saw that i had 45 days to cancel , honestly i don't want to wait a month or more before i move on this, so was asking how long would you wait? 2 days? 3 days? a week...2?

sorry for the long story above, just wanted to lay it out to try and give a good idea of whats really going on...

I think you are being impatient. If he said it's yours and you paid, then wait a few days. If no response in a week or two. Then I would start to be concerned and escalate communications.

thanks for the feed back!

ok then, like i said i'm new to this sort of transaction, and if that's the general consensus on how things are dealt with then fair enough, i just don't know what to think or expect at this point! thanks again, just trying to fit in here play well with others!

He was on yesterday morning, have you not heard from him since then?

no and that's part of what i'm finding funny about this. if i got my panties in a wad over nothing fair enough, but not hearing anything but seeing some activity has got me perplexed...i already sent a couple of emails and don't want to blow the guy up/hassle him unreasonably but I've seen him on and still haven't had a response...sorry again guys, i'm just trying to figure out the way all of this works, if it was CL,Ebay, or in person i'd know what to expect, i'm just new to this whole style of things ...and kinda want to know the protocol before throwing up red flags or doing anything that would reflect poorly on me or him in future transactions, the sticky was helpful but didn't quite go into how long you should wait till you freak out, haha,

Its been over a month and he hasn't shipped it yet ?

Is he responding to your email ?

It's only been three days. As said above just give it a few more days nothing to worry about yet

haha, no it's only been 2 days since payment was sent, but no response either way since then, i was asking how long should i wait!
sorry for the confusion, i'd rather look stupid now and figure out how things work around here as there's a few other guys i want to buy things from as we speak but am holding off till i figure this out as i don;t want a bunch of bad feedback due to me stumbling around here...

:@rycen
cool, will do, so for future reference about a week is good with no contact before you pull the retract/cancellation card?
again just sorting this out so i never have to bug you guys again with this sort of drivel.

Oh, I just looked at the date it was listed. My bad.

OP, As has been said, give it some time. I'm sure all is fine.

I would probably wait a little more than a week but whatever makes you comfortable it's your choice.

I sent him a private message to inform him of this thread.

ok, i'll wait a bit over a week, I'm trying to figure out what i should be comfortable with, as the no response thing is bothering me, I've had things run on longer than a few weeks before but communication was always good and it was with people i had known for a year or so anyways..

thanks for dropping him a PM, i was trying to keep him out of this thread though so my current issue/maybe personal issue, doesn't result in any negative effect on him.

thanks a ton guys really appreciate it!

You may be a little premature in getting nervous.. But .. When a person has something for sale or has sold something they have to be responsive. End of story. They don't have to baby the buyer by any means but they should be clear on shipping times and just putting the buyer at ease. It is very early for you right now but it just seems that to many times around here people are left in the dark.

you can't expect to email a person one day and get the reply the next. now a week or better I can see the complaint but 3 days?? I did 1 buy here and my biggest probblem was I was stupid and had a heck of a time leaving feed back for the person. it just took time and we solved it. I was very happy with the knife that I bought. I wish you luck. I see alot of deals and knifes being sold here on this site. once in a while you get a bad apple but the mods fix that probblem really fast.

Depends on the person and email access, some people may check there email every hour, once a day, every other day, maybe once a week. Personally I check it at least 5 times a day, more if I am selling something. I try and ship out a knife or item within a day, two at most. I would give someone 7-10 days before getting upset, life can happen, work, sickness, death in family, etc...

I have to agree that 3 days to file a paypal claim is a little impatient...BUT...if I paid promptly (or immediately via paypal) I expect communication...3 days with no word while someone has my money is 2 days too long. Sending an "I got the payment and will ship ASAP" is pretty easy and takes seconds...from a computer, from a smart phone, whatever....if you are selling a knife I should hope you are checking the thread and email more than once a week....if that is the case, maybe you have more important things to be doing than selling knives online...

Barring email communication, if I paypal someone, they have my money immediately. I expect not to have to wait a week until someone gets off their butt to ship the knife. This isn't Ebay...

Hi Jason - I replied to your e-mail on the update. The sheath is in the main and it should arrive on Monday. - Tom
