Taking away your rights straight from PayPal:

"Unless you opt out: (1) you will only be permitted to pursue claims against PayPal on an individual basis, not as a plaintiff or class member in any class or representative action or proceeding and (2) you will only be permitted to seek relief (including monetary, injunctive, and declaratory relief) on an individual basis."

How to opt out straight from PayPal:

Opt-Out Procedure.

You can choose to reject this Agreement to Arbitrate ("opt out") by mailing us a written opt-out notice ("Opt-Out Notice"). For new PayPal users, the Opt-Out Notice must be postmarked no later than 30 Days after the date you accept the User Agreement for the first time. If you are already a current PayPal user and previously accepted the User Agreement prior to the introduction of this Agreement to Arbitrate, the Opt-Out Notice must be postmarked no later than December 1, 2012. You must mail the Opt-Out Notice to PayPal, Inc., Attn: Litigation Department, 2211 North First Street, San Jose, CA 95131.

The Opt-Out Notice must state that you do not agree to this Agreement to Arbitrate and must include your name, address, phone number, and the email address(es) used to log in to the PayPal account(s) to which the opt-out applies. You must sign the Opt-Out Notice for it to be effective. This procedure is the only way you can opt out of the Agreement to Arbitrate. If you opt out of the Agreement to Arbitrate, all other parts of the User Agreement, including all other provisions of Section 14 (Disputes with PayPal), will continue to apply. Opting out of this Agreement to Arbitrate has no effect on any previous, other, or future arbitration agreements that you may have with us.

Example letter, just remember to sign your name at the bottom

PayPal, Inc.,
Attn: Litigation Department,
2211 North First Street,
San Jose, CA 95131.

I have been a member of eight class actions over the years.

I got some coupons for pennies off and a check for $17.37 (Never cashed the check.)

The class action lawyers got $millions.

I get what you are saying, but just rolling over and letting your rights be taken does not seem like a justified inaction.

Gosh, I would have cashed that $17.37 check. At least it would be something in the hand.

Hmmm...looks like the thread got moved even though it does not fit the criteria of the section

"This is your area to tell about your experiences (Good or Bad) with dealers, sellers, and individuals you've bought, sold, and traded with."

This has nothing to do with telling about experiences, it is letting people know of policy changes.

It is going to generate feedback, it does infact belong here which is why it got moved. This is where people know to look for such things.

Tixx - eBay is requiring the same, but this shouldn't be a surprise as Paypal is owned by eBay.

By opting out, you essentially give yourself the option of joining a class action suit. As Thomas L. points out, what you would most likely receive as part of a settlement from a class action would be relatively trivial in comparison to the fees that the lawyers will collect OR the cost of a gallon of gas....

Yes, by opting out you retain you rights. You may not receive much, but is it about the amount you receive or the freedom you lose? That is for everyone to make their own choice, I am just raising awareness.

How about not doing business with them? I dropped pay pal several years ago and haven't regreted a minute of the time since.

I have been a member of a handful of class actions suits. I have never bothered to cash, or collect on them.

One was worth $350, but I did not collect on that. Hundai's American release of a model did not have the stated horse power. The foreign version did, and the American version did not, due to stricter emissions. I got a voucher to up the horse power by the 6hp, or get the value in accessories for the vehicle. I did not base my purchase on the horsepower claims, I did not feel it was under powered, and I would have bought the same vehicle again in a heart beat, so I did not use the vouchers.

Several others were also ignored by me (some worth about half that).

I just am not that litigious, which is funny, because I am a lawyer.

I would do so for a dangerous product, etc.

I completely agree with this ^
