If you didn't have the money directly deposited to your bank account, then the money should show up on your balance after you log into Paypal. You can draw against the balance (for online purchases) or request a check from paypal. I recall having to spend a fair amount of time navigating around the Paypal sight for answers.

Second - where did the money go?
there can be a few different answers -
a. IF the seller paid you using a PayPal echeck, you have to wait a few days for it to clear. It will show in your PayPal account as "Pending" for about 3 days -
business days - then will show as "Cleared" (and available to you for use) in your PayPal account. They will not be refected in your PayPal Account Balance until they have cleared.
b. IF the seller paid you using a PayPal Instant Payment out of a bank account they've confirmed with PayPal, OR with a credit card they've confirmed with PayPal- the money will be immediately available to you in your PayPal account.

(After sitting in your PayPal account for a day or two.)
But, if you sell something and want the money as cash - (the green ones with the presidents on them) - you have to set up a bank account specifically for that purpose with PayPal.
Then after someone pays you using PayPal - you can make a "Withdrawal" from your PayPal account. (Log onto your PayPal account, and look for the "Withdraw" button.) PayPal will send the amount you withdraw into the bank account you set up for that purpose.
It takes about 3 business days for the money to go from your PayPal account to your bank account. During that time it's in kind of "limbo" - you are not able to access (spend or withdraw) that money in transfer.
The money will stay in your PayPal account until and unless you make a withdrawal from your PayPal account.
If you haven't set up a bank account for PayPal to send your money into, they explain how to do that on the site. It takes a few days because they have to confirm that it's really your account.
Also if you don't have a bank account to withdraw funds into, you can request a check in the mail from PayPal for the amount that you want - again by using the "Withdraw" button on the PayPal site. They'll charge you a fee for doing it that way, though. If you withdraw into a bank account you set up with them, there's no fee for withdrawal.
