PayPal refund to credit card?

I recently returned merchandise that I purchased using a credit card through my PayPal account.

The merchant refunded immediately, and PayPal says on my user account page that they refunded the money to my credit card on 2/21/06. My online credit card statement does not reflect this, however. It still shows that I paid the money to PayPal but never that I got it back.

I tried calling my card company (AMEX) today but they were not helpful in the least. They said I need a receipt number for the merchandise if they will "investigate" it. I offered the PayPal confirmation number or transaction number or any PayPal number and the woman on the phone was completely uninterested.

So how long should I ride this before I keep calling people?

I know that it can take 5-7 days for PayPal to put money into a bank account, but can I expect the same thing for my credit card? I was trying to get this done in a hurry since my statement closes tonight and I wanted this off the monthly bill.

Please advise on how I should best handle this.

Thanks!

Any time you return or purchase an item, it takes a few days to "post" to your account. The credit should show up in a few days.

This seems odd, everytime I got a refund from a CC Paypal return, it has gone directly to my Paypal balance. In anycase it can take 3-4 day's to post a refund to a credit card statement.

Thanks, guys, that's comforting.
I would have never even thought of it in the first place if the status was listed as "pending" or something of that nature. It just seems silly for them to list the item as "completed" when the credit hasn't actually been posted.

Tombstone, I also thought that it would just go to my PayPal balance, though I don't really care whether the balance goes straight to my CC or to my PayPal balance. It never gave any option though.

Paypal likes to 'sit' on the money for 3-4 days even up to a week sometimes before a refund goes thru or even an e-check. Electronic transfers are quick for transactions, but they hold on to it like that so that they earn interest on the money. With the vast amount of transactions they handle, it earns them quite a return.

TOTC,
This has been my experience as well. If I paid through Paypal via CC, the refund was posted directly to my CC as well. It may take 3-4 business days to post. If it runs any longer than that, I would start making phone calls.
