I got an email from PP today stating that they are making changes to the account agreement. (Their instructions to read them did not work but) I did a search on Brave and found it here. https://www.paypal.com/us/legalhub/upcoming-policies-full

If I understand correctly they are changing the Privacy Agreement in November 2024 and will start sharing information with vendors early summer 2025.

"We are updating our Privacy Statement to explain how, starting early Summer 2025, we will share information to help improve your shopping experience and make it more personalized for you. The key update to the Privacy Statement explains how we will share information with merchants to personalize your shopping experience and recommend our services to you. Personal information we disclose includes, for example, products, preferences, sizes, and styles we think you’ll like. Information gathered about you after the effective date of our updated Privacy Statement, November 27, 2024, will be shared with participating stores where you shop, unless you live in California, North Dakota, or Vermont. "

I don't see and option to opt out except for certain states. I may have to find a new cash app for transactions.

Thoughts?

I don't understand. I just sold a flashlight to a BFer this morning. He paid me via PP. Which vendor would PP share this transaction with? And why should I care? If I sell a Benchmade knife and get paid via PP, will PP notify Benchmade corporation that some guy sold one of their knives? This makes no sense to me.

I guess if you use PayPal online to secretly buy women's underwear unbeknownst to your wife, they may share your favorite styles with Victoria's Secret so they can spam you either online or via email.

Then, when the missus finds out...

Of course, I''m not referring to your habits, L D'B... 🤣

I imagine it's for commercial stores and websites that accept Paypal. Places like ebay, Target, etc.

Doesn't surprise me.

I just recently noticed that I couldn't use my pp balance in checking out on retail sites. It only had my cc and bank as payment options.

Then I had to go into my settings and change "backup funding" to allow use of my pp balance (it used to use your pp balance first by default)... but now when checking out at a retailer it lists my available balance as "paypal debit card" instead of just "balance".

It wouldn't surprise me to find out that paypals newfound ability to share you information somehow hinged on that change.

It's no different than what Amazon does or anyone else. Google or whatever browser you use. All that stuff.

It's just what they use to try to sell you stuff. Like when I get ads they're all for watches, knives and Dickies or red kap.

It's not like they're giving a vendor your passwords and account access. They're just telling people you like whatever you like so they know what kind of ads to throw at you.

I would think they would find vendors interested in what you buy, not what you sell

As a general matter, I just assume any tech company I do business with is reporting on me to other vendors and the govt.

If this is a new addition to PP privacy policy then they're way behind on this one.

I guess I got over-excited LOL. It has been this way for a while with other sites. ~5 years ago I saw a picture that included a fishing reel. I was curious and did an Amazon search on my personal PC for more info. Next day on my work laptop (at a large corporation with strong security) I took a look at the Weather Channel and boom! Tons of Amazon ads for that reel.

Dropped PP years ago. My business is my business & not for publication/public use. There are alternatives.
