So here's a question that'll probably make you roll your eyes at me.. But being new to a membership here, I am also new to PayPal. What should I expect when buying things? Do I use the gift to someone option, or do I use the paying for a goods or service? Thank you in advance for puttin up with the new guy! ;)

That depends on how you plan on using Paypal. PayPal is a company, not a nonprofit. They have no ads and so the only way they make money is by charging a fee. If you care about that then buy/sell with the goods option. If it matters more to save a few bucks, then do the gift option.

One further tip. If you're a seller, don't be "that guy" who asks the buyer to pay the fee. Not only is that a selfish move, you're breaking Paypal's rules. Either offer to cover fees or accept the gift option.

Using the gift option removes any possible recourse if the deal goes south for some reason. If you are buying goods or services, click on buying goods or services. Reputable sellers should not ask you to use "gift" or pay extra fees.

Only use gift if you're comfortable with, just like a gift receiving nothing in return.

If you use the gift option and have a typo in the email address, then you gave a gift to a stranger.
The fees that paypal charges is comparable to what you pay with a merchant's account for accepting credit cards.
They provide a valuable, easy to use service.
My thoughts are that if we cheat them by sending as a gift to avoid fees eventually they either discontinue the gift option for legitimate gifts or raise the fees.

After perusing the classifieds here, I have been very put off by the volume of sellers on this site requesting payments as gifts, or stipulating various fees be added (often over those charged by PayPal). Those things are deal breakers for me - I have never requested, or accepted, them as a seller; and I won't cooperate as a buyer. I'm somewhat surprised that it is such a widespread practice here; and that so many people consider it normal/acceptable.

DO NOT USE THE GIFT OPTION.

If something goes bad you'll have no recourse to get your money back. Just don't ever use it. Don't deal with people who want you to use it either.

I agree. I'm surprised it's allowed.

This has come up many times and I agree with feeling put off with the fee's. Not only is it against the Paypal user agreement but the seller benefits from the service as well. Instant payment and flexible use of the funds from purchases to transfer to bank accounts. To make a buyer pay the fee for which the seller also benefits from convenience is wrong. And the funny thing is it's not a lot of money so why lose a sale for what amounts to a few dollars?

Perhaps this should be a new thread, but has anyone used the "square cash" option? I understand there are no fees for this service. If this has been hashed out, my apologies, I am a newbie, too.

You can use gift if you'd like to forgo your protection as a buyer, sure. Especially around strangers. ;)
I would not use the gift option unless you are giving someone money as a gift, otherwise use Paypal according to their terms or use. You need to read their website for the details of how to use, not this site. But that is just advice, you can do whatever you wanna do.

We are not in the business of enforcing another companies rules. No one considers it "normal or acceptable". That is why at the end of the day you can choose who you buy from and who not to buy from. Do we like it? Hell no we don't like it, but there isn't much to be done about it. It's been discussed to death already.

I didn't mean that I was put off by the site - I was referring specifically to the volume of sellers that include those caveats in their ads. For whatever it's worth, I don't think you can seriously state that No one considers it "normal or acceptable" unless you haven't scrolled through the classifieds recently.....judging from the number of sellers requesting it & the fact that their items sell, it certainly appears that a good number of people are unfazed by the practice.
(I'm quite skilled at closing ads and moving on; so it was really nothing more than an observation on my part)

I understand most a lot of people use PayPal.
I don't.
Google paypal horror stories. ;)

As a moderator of this particular section, I've seen more than my fair share of those ads. The owner of the site has made it clear, Bladeforums is a venue to buy, sell, and trade, how people want to go about that is their own business. I did in fact state that no one considers it normal or acceptable, you read right. Which I why I went on to say that you can choose who to buy from. just an observation to your observation is all. This is what we call discussion. ;)
But at the end of the day (again), Spark may change his mind regarding this, one never knows.

I've only sold a couple knives on here and accepted it as goods. All you've got to do to is include the fees and shipping in your asking price. If you want $100 profit for your knife, sell it for $110 to include the fees and shipping. makes sense to me.

Thank all of you for your input. I had seen alot of people asking for funds to be sent as a gift, and seeing that it would be exactly that (money with no attachments) I was a tad confused about if this was standard practice here or not. Thank you for clearing that up for me. I now understand how the gift button works a little more now. I will definitely keep in mind that people that are not willing to sell as actual payment and not a gift(even with fees included) I proooobably dont want to be dealing with them! ;)

So far I've paid for one knife to an individual using PayPal. No way was I going to "gift" the money and the seller didn't ask for the fee to be included, but I did anyway once I saw how little the fee actually was.
