OK,
So, Ive been toying around with creating a survival kit from an emptied plastic peanut butter jar. I always have had an altoids sized kit with me when going for a hike, but ive been thinking of having a little bigger kit with something to provide a quick shelter, some food stuffs (like candy, tea bags, and bullion cubes, etc) a better water carrying system, and it will supply the room for better secondary tools (bigger SAK, more cordage, MORE DUCT TAPE :D

Recently I saw a picture of one of those inexpensive Coleman cups with a peanut butter jar inside of it, and it clicked. Ive been collecting PB jars for a while now (I have about 4 of the 16 ouncers). So, my question is, how many of you have these kits already? What do you have in them? And what was the total cost of your kit?

Just another fun project while I can't get out of the house.

Why not? It's about like taking on a Nalgene kit. You have a good canteen once you fill your pockets with the contents.

How about food in one and hardware in another? Cost wise, these kits can nickel and dime you.

What would I pack? Assuming you have a knife in your pocket or on your belt...
Compass
Duct tape fer sure!
LED micro light
Whistle
Signal mirror
Firesteel
Mini Bic
Matches in safe
Tinder
Space blanket
Mini felt tip marker
First aid goodies-- bandaids, moleskin, antibiotic ointment <-- more first aid if you have room
Sunscreen
Bug repellent
Leatherman Micra or SAK Classic
Fishing kit with pre-tied leaders, Spiderwire, split shot
Wire for improvising and snares
Paracord
Small line (I like braided nylon)
Tick tweezers
Hard candy
Micropur water treatment tablets
Single edge razor blades
Surveyor tape
Hotel freebie sewing kit
Garbage bag
Sunglasses
Bandana

As far as the kit, I think Dale just about hit all the good stuff, at least most of it would probably fit in the kit. I think making a small should pouch to hold the cup and jar/kit would set it off re: practicality.

Here's one I made from a pair of pants for a nalgene size bottle:

I have one. It does fit a good amount of stuff, but it doesn't ride well in a cargo pocket for me.

If you pack well they seem to hold everything except a space blanket and garbage bags etc. soft stuff on top to reduce the rattle.

Also the ones I have tried ended up only being water resistant - they took on water very slowly when submerged. So, IMO good in theory, but not that great in practice.

Ended up using a cell phone size soft pouch.

Oh yeah, an Illy coffee can fits very well around the outside of some of these PB jars.

Enjoy your PSK fixin's!

That peanut butter jar and speckle cup combo is really good. You can pick the cups up in a thrift store super cheap and they don't cost much new. It begs to be matched up with a mora, or an SAK dangling from the handle.

The stinker for these kits is the space blanket. They are good to have, but they suck up space in a hurry. If you have a loose fitting carry bag, then you can just stuff the space blanket on the side. That leaves the sealed container for the loose items that can get lost and provides some water protection. A used stuff sack will work, or even a heavy zip lock bag.

Forget emptying it out.... pack your survival stuff in a ziplock bag and stick it right in the middle of the peanut butter! That stuff's good :)
