tell in detail how to use PBC anti-scale. hope you have the time.
vern :)

Vern, is it the ATP 641 from Brownells? If so I brush it on with a small paint brush all over the blade, then I hit it with the heat gun to flash it off. I mix Satanite with some more ATP then clay my blade up and hit that with a heat gun to flash it off.

If you're not using ATP then disregard anything I just said :p

thanks

Yes Bruce. I have a jar of it, but have not yet tried it. I am very skeptical of it, but I will try it soon. So far I am happy with the powder.

I'm happy with the powder too but I will need to re-order some day and will use the liquid. Tell me how it works OK?:)

Here are a few pic's from my SS and D-2 HT trial
No before of the Sandvick SS. The scale was awful and Tuff! SS foil
was so much better. I still would like to try the ATP/Satanite mix for
Oil Quench.(My 0-1 satanite covered,Oil quench was really clean)

The scale from PBC powder comes off easily. Much of it in the quench, which probably need to be filtered out, sooner or later.

This will not be helpful, just a dumba$$ anecdote for your eternal amusement.

Haven't HT anything for a couple years but last weekend thought I'd give it a shot. The dumba$$ part is I only heated the freakin blade to 300 - read the box Dave! It takes 500 to melt the powder. I got the powdered PBC from Brownell's too. I'm just too stupid to use it. Liquid sounds great! Probably should still read the directions a few times first though.

For what it's worth, I "heated" the blade and sprinkled the stuff on from a former BBQ spice jar. Now I have a mix of semi-melted PBC and scale on my big, sweet blade. Ah well, I'm used to scale...

Dave, I hope thats not a picture of you on your avatar. :D

Ive never been able to screw up with PBC. It doesnt melt well at 500 but starts to really coats well at about 800. That is well under the scale forming range anyway. Its OK to put a couple coats on to cover any pimples or puckers. The stuff makes a good shield against oxygen. I use it for nearly finished pistol parts and springs as well as blades.

That was also my experience with the liquid... Won't be wasting any more steel on that, thank you very much. I'm a loyal PBC and foil man from here on out. The scale was thicker than most hotrolled I've pruchased and MUCH harder to remove.

No telling what I actually look like! :D

Bruce, thanks for the heads up on PBC temp. That's going to save me a lot of grief.

I have found that you can use a propane torch to add the powder to places that did not get enough, and to lessen any bubbles in the coating. With the torch, the coating doen't flow well, but it adheres and covers. Bruce is right on with the heat. You have to go much higher than what is recommended. I have been going at 650o, but will try next time at 800o. You have to get the powder along the edge area first, or it will cool and not allow flow.

I haven't had any scaling using the ATP 641 except the time I used fireplace mortar instead of waiting for my shipment of Satanite. I have noticed that after it dries there are places where it seems to pull back or shrink so you have to do some touch up.
