I received a call today from a local knifemaker and friend, Lee Brooks. He told me that he was called by someone at Chapters, a large chain of book stores, and told that he would no longer be able to get any knife magazines from the Chapters stores. Gun magazines and mags like Soldier of Fortune would no longer be made available either. It seems like they have decided to knuckle under to those who have complained that these publications do not send the right message, particularly after the events of 9/11. What a pile of bull pucky.

This kind of idiocy drives me crazy. Do these people really think that reading knife magazines will make you want to go out and blow up a building.

I contacted Chapters myself after hearing this and was told by the manager of the Chapters that I was getting my knife magazines from that she would have to contact head office and get the official position of the company from them, and that she would get back to me within a couple of days. I will let everyone know what they say.

It is looking more and more like knife lovers are going to have to become a secret society that meets in hidden away places and knows each other only by the rings they wear and a secret handshake. :barf:

Keith, Chapters was bought out by Indigo (last year, I think)...Indigo has always had a "family" friendly atmosphere and I don't think they EVER carried gun or knife rags...it was only a matter of time before their corporate BS filtered down to Chapters...

A bigger suprise is that a big chain like la Maison de la Presse Internationale stopped selling Tactical Knives...I mean they still sell porn of all types!!

Book stores have traditionally been bastions of free speach and exchange of ideas.

Traditionally, the role of the book store has not been to edit or censor information but to offer all sorts of information and literature and allow the intelligent reader to formulate his own opinions and make his own judgements.

It's very dangerous when some corporate headquarters somewhere starts to decide what the rest of us should and shouldn't be reading.

I may be wrong, I frequently am, but the local Boarders (a big chain) just rearranged their magazine section and I noticed to my dismay that my favorite section with the guns, knives, bows, hunting and fishing etc has been moved and drastically downsized. I really don’t pay too much attention to the gun mags (I like the bows myself), all I can say on them is that there are a lot fewer. As far as Knife Mags I cannot find one. No Blade, Knives Illustrated, or Tactical Knives.
I’m not sure if this is an official policy, or they didn’t sell enough so they don’t carry them any more or what, but it all happened rather suddenly.

Yhanks for the info Keith! Last x-mas my fiancee got me a pile of gift certificates so I could buy Tac Knives each month it came out on the shelves. I was wondering what happenned when the last issue or 2 wasn't available at Chapters! Also, I did notice the gun magazine selection got thinner and thinner until I think there is only 2 or 3 gun magazines on the shelf now. I guess that soon the only excitement at Chapters will be Harry Potter and Oprah's book club :)

I disagree, Gollnick. It would be a problem for government to tell us what to read or not to read. But business isn't government. These people can sell or stop selling whatever they want.

We should simply take our book buying business elswhere. I know the Barnes and Noble store in our marketplace has a broad selection of gun and knife magazines. I know because I buy them there regularly. I assume the magazines are available in every marketplace somewhere. Private enterprise will see to it.

"Who's there?"

"Chapters"

"Chapters who?"

"Chapters the BS/PC bookstore that has sovereign right to sell whatever we want and restrict your access to things that we deem 'unsavory' because we can, and you can't do sh!t about it because we say so, and also because some of you phucking idiots think that we have a 'right' to our position because you're so phucking lame that you believe whatever bull$hit we feed you...any questions? btw, that's who."

"Oh"

Well Keith that doesnt really surprise me about Chapters/Indego. I assume you visit the one at WEM or on 170th street for them?

I quit buying gun and knife magazines there some time ago and now I give all my business to a place called Frontpage which is downtown on about 104th street and Jasper. They have a decent selection which is getting more and more difficult to find all the time.

According to their web site, the Chapters customer service phone number is 1-800-832-7569 or 905-789-2600 in the Greater Toronto area.

Or go <a href="http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/contactus.asp?Section=home&Cat=&Lang=en&mscssid=78SL8MAD1SQR9N7HDH19PK7E9D6VFSP8&WSID=1409D67B4017E3AE4C6CAF30D12853FFCE7A3218">here</a> to make your feelings known.

This is kind of a pet peeve of mine too. Every time I go to the mall, I check to see if anything has changed. Go into your local Waldenbooks and try to find a gun or knife or hunting magazine. You probably wont find any. But, directly in the front at eye level, you will find the latest copy of High Times magazine with a full color photo of a giant, multicolored marijuana bud. Talk about your hypocrites! They wont sell magazines about perfectly legal hobbies and pastimes, but will encourage the use of a substance that is currently illegal. :barf:

Gaze fondly upon today when u can actually but a knife mag at ur local bookstore, for tommorow is bound to suck worse...:(

Let's see, this is the United States, a free country.

Chapters, or any other business, has the right to sell or not sell a particular product.

We, as consumers, have the right to patronize, or not patronize, any given business.

The concept that Chapters is a PC organization may be incorrect. Perhaps the owner is just exercising their right to market what they please. Yes folks, their right to do what they choose is just as important as my right to read what I choose. Where do we get the idea that anyone has any obligation to provide us with material that we think is acceptable?

Let's use our dollars, and the free enterprise system, to register our protest. But, let them know by calling and telling them!!!!!!

Yeah this is my pet peave also. I actually agree with both Chuck and Fred (even though they disagree...lol). I -think- what Chuck means..., is that when "Business" gets lobbied/intimidated by politcal agendas, it is dangerous.., and in turn, sort of distorts what we would normally label "Free" or "Private" enterpise.

The point Danbo makes is certainly the concrete example of how special interest organizations with a political agenda target certain areas while ignoring some that should be obvious targets simply because they are blantantly and globally illegal.

In my view.., this is a subtle (but real) form of "Government" intervention, although not done in the form of written mandate. There are actually lots of similar examples like Danbo's.., where extremely damaging publications are openly allowed, but everything with any sort firearm or knife content suddenly disappears.

If this was simply by choice of the owner of a given business owner, then I would totally agree with Fred's comment about private business taking care of itself, but I'm suspicious about how these large distributors suddenly choose to stop making certain publications available..., and I do think much of this dynamic is politicized ~~> then acted upon with tactics I would consider "Governmental"....

"Hunters seek what they [WANT].., Seekers hunt what they [NEED]"

Many (maybe most) people are very content with their "victim mentality" status which is fine with me. They have zero physical tools, skills or inclination towards self-defense should the need arise. What I do have a major problem are those who demand that I, too, possess the "victim mentality".
My Warrior Spirit is a threat to them because it makes them look very bad (especially to their dumpy little wives). You can walk to the gas chambers nice and peacefully if you like after disembarking the cattle cars, but you won't be seeing me in that line.
What was that "Never again" BS. Ya'all got me started.
You'll wish I were nearby, by the way, when you're wife's being raped while you and your kids watch.
I definitely need to cut back on the coffee.

May piece be with you.

Disclaimer: "You'll", "you're", "ya'all" and "you" don't refer to anyone on this forum.

Smooff - smooofff. (cough cough) (cloud of smoke) What's wrong with that, dude?

;)

Our local Barnes & Noble carries only about two or three gun magazines and no knife magazines. BUT, our local Books-a-million carries EVERYTHING (for now).....

Guess which one gets my business??? ;)
