PDA questions ebook reader and better batteries

I've got an old sony clie that I got cheap but I've got a couple of problems. First I need to know how to read .lit and .pdb files I've got a whole dvd with ebooks but I dont know how to read the stupid things. Another thing is this thing drains just about any type of AAA that I put into it in a matter of a couple of hours should I use a certain brand/type for longer useable life.
 
Have you tried the new lithium AAA's. I'm assuming they would work ok in your PDA, but you might want to make sure.
