Peak LED Lights

A very good review and round up of recent history in little LED lights. I use an old style McKinley (123) 7 LED on my keys and a single LED AAA in my small First Aid kit. They are both lights I would rely on in any situation and have become trusted companions. The McKinley seems to run well on LiIon batteries too so that reduces costs over time.

I have one Ryan, it is a BRIGHT little bugger! The best and brightest small light there is period.....even despite the color temperature. Got two more on order for gifts as well...

Got a 3 LED Ultra Matterhorn in my pocket right now. Great little light and as bright as the new Arc but lacks the sidespill. Still, the color is outstanding and the throw is surprising.
So the Arc is still as bright/brigher than the 3 LED Matterhorn? A bit supprising (3 should be better than one...so one might think), but nice to know, since I just picked up a couple Arc AAA Premiums myself.

The ARC supprised the hell out of me. An amazing amount of light in such a small package. It gives plenty of light for short outdoor tasks, like taking out the garbage. The sidespill is impressive, and the throw is as much as I could possibly expect; probably even better than the Inova X1, despite the X1's unique spot. It's almost as bright as my .5W Cateye bike light, and that runs on 4 AAs.

One of my Arcs is slightly brighter than the other, and has almost a piss yellow tint to it (very slight). The other is a tiny bit dimmer, and has more of the bluish tint we're all familiar with (although still whiter than my Photons).

I'm tempted to get one of the Peak CR123A ones, like the Caribbean, but I'm thinking it's a bit large for a keychain.

How does the twist-on method on the Peaks work after a couple months of use?

The reason I'm asking is that I had a Gerber Sonic on my keychain for a couple months and began noticing it was getting increasingly harder to twist it to actually make it come on. I finally removed it and replaced it with one of my Photons since it wasn't working very well.

I'm sure Peaks are much better than the Sonics or even the Infinity Ultras but this has been the main reason I haven't bought a Peak yet. I guess I'm more of a fan of the click-type switches on the tailcap rather than a twist-on tailcap or head.

Does Peak have a mod for a click type switch or should I even be worrying about their performance using the twist-on method?

One more question. How do the Peaks stand up to pocket abuse? My Sonic sucked. It has deep dents and scratches all over it from riding in my pocket next to my keys. Gerber says it's constructed of aircraft aluminum but doesn't specify a grade or type (kinda like they do with their knife steel  ).

Does the twist-on work like on the maglites? ie you twist and twist and suddenly the head comes off...

Or does it have two positions, on and off, ie.. twist *click* and it's on... twist back *click* and it's off ?

This will happen with other lights too. A bit of silicon grease on the o-ring should help.

Peaks have a Type III hard anodized finish which will make the difference. I don't own one (but am considering one) but I know that finish is very durable. It stands up very well in the reviews I've seen.

If you keep twisting the Peak head off it will come undone. That's how you change the battery. I have never had a problem with mine falling off by accident.

I EDC a peak light and the head has never fallen off either. I have had it turn itself on in my pocket a couple of times however, but the head gets warm after a few minutes so you can feel that its on and turn it off.
